King James Version

1 Kings • Chapter 17

1 And Elijah the Tishbite from the settlers of Gilead said to Ahab, "As the Lord God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew or rain in these years except by my word." 2 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying… 3 Go from here and turn to the east, and you shall hide by the brook Cherith that is before the Jordan. 4 And it shall be that from the brook you shall drink, and the ravens I have commanded to feed you there. 5 And he went and did as the word of the Lord, and he went and sat by the brook Cherith that is opposite the Jordan. 6 And the ravens bring him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drinks from the brook. 7 And it came to pass after many days, and the river was dried up because there was no rain in the land. 8 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying. 9 Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there; behold, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you. 10 And he arose and went to Zarephath, and he came to the gate of the city, and behold, there was a widow there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, "Please bring me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink." 11 And she went to take, and he called to her and said, "Please bring me a piece of bread in your hand." 12 And she said, “As surely as the Lord your God lives, if I have a cake, it is only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. Behold, I am gathering two sticks, and I will go and prepare it for me and my son, that we may eat it and die.” 13 And he said to her, "Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said. But make me a small cake first, and bring it to me, and afterward make something for yourself and your son." 14 For thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: The jar of flour shall not be exhausted, and the jug of oil shall not be lacking until the day that the LORD sends rain upon the face of the ground. 15 And she went and did according to the word of Elijah, and she and he and her household ate for many days. 16 The jar of flour did not run out, and the jug of oil did not become empty, according to the word of the Lord that He spoke by the hand of Elijah. 17 And it was after these words that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell ill; and his illness was very severe until no breath remained in him. 18 And she said to Elijah, "What do I have to do with you, O man of God? You have come to me to bring up my sin and to kill my son." 19 And he said to her, “Give me your son.” And he took him from her embrace and carried him up to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed. 20 And he cried out to the Lord and said, "Lord my God, will You also destroy the widow with whom I dwell by killing her son?" 21 And he lay down on the child three times and called to the Lord and said, "O Lord my God, let this child's soul return to him, I pray." 22 And the Lord heard the voice of Elijah, and the soul of the child returned to him, and he lived. 23 And Elijah took the boy and brought him down from the upper room of the house and gave him to his mother, and Elijah said to her, "See, your son lives." 24 And the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is truth."
