King James Version

1 Kings • Chapter 18

1 And it happened after many days that the word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year, saying, "Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the face of the ground." 2 And Elijah went to show himself to Ahab, and the famine was severe in Samaria. 3 And Ahab called to Obadiah who was over the house, and Obadiah feared the Lord greatly. 4 And when Jezebel had wiped out the prophets of the Lord, Obadiah took one hundred prophets and hid them fifty to a cave and sustained them with bread and water. 5 And Ahab said to Obadiah, "Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the rivers; perhaps we will find grass and keep a horse and a mule alive, and do not let the animals die." 6 And they divided the land for them to pass through it; Ahab went one way alone, and Obadiah went one way alone. 7 And Obadiah was on the way, and behold, Elijah met him, and he recognized him, and he fell on his face and said, "Are you indeed my lord Elijah?" 8 And he said to him, "I go, say to your lord, 'Here is Elijah.'" 9 And he said, "What have I sinned, that you are giving your servant into the hand of Ahab to kill me?" 10 As surely as the Lord your God lives, if there is a nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you, and they said, "There is none," and he made the kingdom and the nation take an oath, for you will not find them. 11 And now you say, "Go, say to your lord, 'Here is Elijah.'" 12 And I will go away from you, and the Spirit of the Lord will carry you to where I do not know, and I will come to tell Ahab, and he will not find you, and you will kill me, but your servant fears the Lord from my youth. 13 "Did I not tell my lord what I did when I killed Jezebel and hid the prophets of Yahweh, a hundred men, fifty by fifty, in the cave, and fed them bread and water?" 14 And now you say, "Go say to your lord, 'Here is Elijah, and he seeks to kill me.'" 15 And Elijah said, "As the Lord of Hosts lives, before whom I stand, surely today I will be seen by you." 16 And Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17 And it happened when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, "Are you the one troubling Israel?" 18 And he said, "I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father's house have forsaken the commandments of the Lord and have followed the Baals." 19 And now send and gather to me all Israel at Mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of Asherah four hundred, who eat at Jezebel's table. 20 And Ahab sent to all the children of Israel and gathered the prophets to Mount Carmel. 21 And Elijah approached all the people and said, "How long will you halt between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him." And the people answered him not a word. 22 And Elijah said to the people, "I alone remain a prophet of the LORD, but the prophets of Baal are four hundred and fifty men." 23 And they will give us two bulls, and they will choose for themselves the one bull, and they will cut it up, and they will place it on the wood, and fire they will not place. And I will do the one bull, and I will set it on the wood, and fire I will not set. 24 And you shall call in the name of your God, and I will call in the name of the LORD, and the God who answers by fire, He is the God. And all the people answered and said, "It is good, the word." 25 And Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many, and call upon the name of your god, but do not put fire under it." 26 And they took the bull that was given to them, and they did it, and they called in the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, "Baal, answer us!" But there was no voice and no answer, and they leaped upon the altar that they had made. 27 And it happened at noon that Elijah mocked them and said, "Call out with a loud voice, for he is a god; perhaps he is deep in thought, or has gone away, or is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and will awaken." 28 And they called out with a loud voice and they cut themselves as was their custom with swords and spears until blood gushed out upon them. 29 And it came to pass that as the afternoon had passed, they prophesied until the offering of the grain offering, and there was no voice and there was no answer and there was no response. 30 And Elijah said to all the people, "Approach me." And all the people approached him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down. 31 And Elijah took twelve stones according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came saying, "Israel shall be your name." 32 And he built the stones a altar in the name of the LORD and made a mound like the height of two seahs around the altar. 33 And he arranged the woods and he cut up the bull and he placed it on the woods. 34 And he said, "Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood." And he said, "Do it again." And they did it again. And he said, "Do it a third time." And they did it a third time. 35 And the waters went around the altar, and also they filled the trench with water. 36 And it happened when the grain offering was raised, that Elijah the prophet approached and said, "Yahweh, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, today it will be known that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant, and in your words I have done all these things." 37 Answer me, O Lord, answer me, and let these people know that you, O Lord, are the God, and you have turned their hearts back. 38 And the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust and the water that was in the trench. 39 And all the people saw and fell on their faces and said, "The Lord, He is God; the Lord, He is God." 40 And Elijah said to them, "Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape." So they seized them, and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and slaughtered them there. 41 And Elijah said to Ahab, "Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of the abundance of rain." 42 And Ahab went up to eat and drink, and Elijah went up to the top of Carmel and bowed down on the earth and put his face between his knees. 43 And he said to his servant, "Go up now, look toward the sea." And he went up and looked, and he said, "There is nothing." And he said, "Return, for seven times." 44 And it was in the seventh [time] that he said, “Behold, a small cloud like a man's hand is rising from the sea.” And he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.’” 45 And it was that until this point and until this point, the heavens were darkened with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain, and Ahab rode and went to Jezreel. 46 And the hand of the LORD was upon Elijah, and he girded up his loins and ran ahead of Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.
