King James Version

1 Kings • Chapter 19

1 And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done and all that he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 And Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "So may the gods do to me and more also, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like the life of one of them." 3 And he saw and arose and went to his soul and came to Beer Sheba which belongs to Judah and he settled his young man there. 4 And he went in the wilderness a day's journey, and he came and sat under a broom tree, and he asked his soul to die, and he said, "It is enough now, O Lord; take my soul, for I am not better than my fathers." 5 And he lay down and slept under a broom tree, and behold, an angel touched him and said to him, "Get up, eat." 6 And he looked, and behold, at my head was a cake of pressed figs and a jug of water; and he ate and drank and sat down and lay down. 7 And the angel of the Lord returned a second time and touched him and said, "Get up, eat, for the journey is too much for you." 8 And he rose up and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food for forty days and forty nights until he reached the mountain of God, Horeb. 9 And he came there to the cave and stayed there, and behold, the word of the Lord came to him and said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" 10 And he said, "I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts, for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword; and I alone am left, and they seek my life, to take it." 11 And he said, "Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord, and behold, the Lord is passing by, and a great and strong wind is tearing the mountains and breaking the rocks before the Lord; the Lord is not in the wind. And after the wind, an earthquake; the Lord is not in the earthquake." 12 And after the earthquake, fire; but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire, a still small voice. 13 And it was when Elijah heard, he wrapped his face in his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave, and behold, a voice came to him and said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" 14 And he said, "I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts, because the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword, and I alone am left, and they seek my life to take it." 15 And the LORD said to me, "Go, return to your way in the wilderness of Damascus, and you shall anoint Hazael as king over Aram." 16 And you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel, and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah as prophet in your place. 17 And the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael shall be killed by Jehu, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehu shall be killed by Elisha. 18 And I left in Israel seven thousand, all the knees that had not bowed to Baal and every mouth that had not kissed him. 19 And he went from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, while he was plowing with twelve yoke before him, and he was with the twelfth. And Elijah passed by him and threw his cloak upon him. 20 And he left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, "Let me kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow you." And Elijah said to him, "Go back again, for what have I done to you?" 21 And he turned back from following him and took the pair of the cattle and sacrificed it, and in the implements of the cattle he boiled the flesh, and he gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he arose and went after Elijah and served him.
