King James Version

1 Samuel • Chapter 1

1 And there was a certain man from Ramathaim-Zophim, from the hill country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite. 2 And he had two wives; the name of one was Hannah and the name of the second was Peninnah. And Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. 3 And the man went up from his city from time to time to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of Hosts in Shiloh, and there were the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests to the Lord. 4 And it was the day that Elkanah sacrificed, and he gave to Peninnah, his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters portions. 5 And to Hannah he would give one portion, because he loved Hannah, but the LORD had closed her womb. 6 And when you were angry with her, there was also anger because of her affliction, for the Lord had shut up His compassion toward her. 7 And thus he shall do year by year, according to her ascending in the house of the Lord; thus she will weep and not eat. 8 And Elkanah her husband said to her, "Hannah, why do you cry, and why do you not eat, and why is your heart sad? Am I not better to you than ten sons?" 9 And Hannah rose after eating in Shiloh, and after drinking. And Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. 10 And she is the bitterness of soul, and she prayed to the LORD and wept bitterly. 11 And she made a vow and said, "Yahweh of hosts, if you truly see the affliction of your servant and remember me and do not forget your servant, and you give your servant a male child, then I will give him to Yahweh all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head." 12 And it will be that when you have increased to pray before the Lord, and Eli will guard his mouth. 13 And Hannah was speaking in her heart; her lips were moving, but her voice was not heard, and Eli thought she was drunk. 14 And he said to her, "How long will you be drunk? Put away your wine from you." 15 And Hannah answered and said, "No, my lord, I am a woman of a troubled spirit; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have poured out my soul before the Lord." 16 Do not give your truth before a daughter of Belial, for I have spoken to her from the abundance of my thoughts and my anger until now. 17 And Eli answered and said, "Go in peace, and may the God of Israel give you what you have asked of Him." 18 And she said, "If I find favor in your eyes, then the woman went on her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad. 19 And they got up early in the morning and bowed down before the LORD, and they returned and came to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her. 20 And it came to pass at the appointed times of the year that Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, because I have asked of the Lord. 21 And the man Elkanah went up with all his household to sacrifice to the LORD the sacrifice of the days and his vow. 22 And Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, "Until the child is weaned, and I will bring him, and we will see the face of the Lord, and he will stay there forever." 23 And Elkanah said to her, "Do what is good in your eyes; stay until you have weaned him. Only may the Lord establish His word." And the woman stayed and nursed her son until she weaned him. 24 And she brought him with her, as she had vowed, with three bulls and one ephah of flour and a jug of wine, and she brought him to the house of the LORD at Shiloh, and the boy was young. 25 And they slaughtered the bull and brought the youth to Eli. 26 And she said, "As surely as you live, my lord, I am the woman who stands here with you to pray to the Lord." 27 I prayed to this boy, and the Lord gave me my request which I asked of Him. 28 And I also have asked the LORD all the days that he was Saul to the LORD, and he bowed there to the LORD.
