King James Version

1 Samuel • Chapter 19

1 And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants to kill David, but Jonathan the son of Saul greatly desired David. 2 Jonathan told David, saying, "Saul your father seeks to kill you. Now therefore, be on your guard in the morning and stay in hiding and be concealed." 3 And I will go out and stand by my father in the field where you are, and I will speak to him about you, and I will see what he says and I will tell you. 4 And Jonathan spoke good to David before Saul his father and said to him, "Let not the king sin against his servant David, for he has not sinned against you and his deeds are very good for you." 5 And he put his soul in his hand and struck the Philistine, and the Lord made a great salvation for all Israel. You saw and you rejoiced, and why would you sin against innocent blood to kill David without cause? 6 And Saul heard the voice of Jonathan, and Saul swore, "As the Lord lives, he shall not die." 7 And Jonathan called to David and told him all these words, and Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence like yesterday and the day before. 8 And the battle continued to be, and David went out and fought against the Philistines, and he struck them with a great blow, and they fled from before him. 9 And the spirit of the Lord was troubling Saul, and he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand, and David was playing with his hand. 10 And Saul sought to strike David with the spear against the wall, but he escaped from Saul and the spear struck the wall, and David fled and escaped that night. 11 And Saul sent messengers to David's house to watch him and to kill him in the morning. And Michal, David's wife, told him, saying, “If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be dead.” 12 And Michal let David down through the window, and he went and fled and escaped. 13 And Michal took the teraphim and placed them on the bed and set a goat's hair at its head and covered it with the blanket. 14 And Saul sent messengers to take David, and they said, "He is sick." 15 And Saul sent messengers to see David, saying, "Bring him up to me on the bed so that I may kill him." 16 And the angels came, and behold, the teraphim were by the bed, and the caprine idols were at my head. 17 And Saul said to Michal, "Why have you deceived me like this and sent away my enemy so that he escaped?" And Michal said to Saul, "He said to me, 'Let me go; why should I kill you?'" 18 And David fled and escaped and came to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he went, and Samuel, and they dwelt at Naioth. 19 And it was reported to Saul, saying, "Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-Gedi." 20 And Saul sent messengers to take David, and he saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as their leader. And the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. 21 And they told Saul, and he sent other messengers, and they prophesied also. And Saul continued and sent messengers thirty, and they prophesied also. 22 And he also went to Ramah and came to the great pit that is in Sechu, and he asked and said, “Where is Samuel and David?” And he said, “Here they are in Naoth in Ramah.” 23 And he went there to the house of the prophet in Ramah, and the Spirit of God was also upon him, and he went on prophesying until he came to the house of the prophet in Ramah. 24 And he also stripped off his clothes, and he prophesied also before Samuel, and he fell naked all that day and all that night. Therefore, they say, "Is Saul also among the prophets?"
