King James Version
2 Kings • Chapter 1
1
And Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab.
2
And Ahaziah fell through the lattice of his upper chamber in Samaria, and he was injured. And he sent messengers, and he said to them, “Go, inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I will recover from this sickness.”
3
And the angel of the Lord spoke to Elijah the Tishbite, "Arise, go to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say to them, 'Is there no God in Israel that you go to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?'"
4
Therefore, thus says the Lord: The measure you have raised there shall not come down from it, for you will surely die. And Elijah went.
5
And the angels turned back to them and said to them, "Why have you stopped?"
6
And they said to me, "A man went up to meet us and said to us, 'Go back to the king who sent you and tell him, thus says Yahweh: Is there no God in Israel that you are sending to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore, the bed to which you have gone up will not come down from it, for you shall surely die.'"
7
And he spoke to them, "What is the judgment of the man who has come to meet you?" And he spoke to you these words.
8
And they said to me, "A man with hair and a leather belt around his waist." And Elijah the Tishbite said to me.
9
And he sent to me a prince of fifty and five, and he ascended to me, and behold, a man of God was sitting on the top of the mountain, and he spoke to me; the king had sent him to say.
10
And Elijah answered and spoke to the captain of the fifty, and if I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty. And fire came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.
11
And he returned and sent to me a captain of fifty and his fifty, and he answered and spoke to me, the man of God, thus says the king, hurry and come down.
12
And Elijah answered and spoke to them, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty." And the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty.
13
And he returned and sent the captain of fifty two times, and he ascended and came to the captain of the third fifty, and he knelt on his knees before Elijah and begged him and spoke to him, "O man of God, please let my life and the life of these fifty servants be precious in your eyes."
14
Behold, fire has come down from the heavens and has consumed the two chief men of the fifty, and their fifty; and now my life is of little value in your eyes.
15
And the angel of the LORD spoke to Elijah, "Go down and do not be afraid of him." And he arose and went down to the king.
16
And he spoke to me, "Thus says the Lord: Because you have sent messengers to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, as there is no God in Israel to inquire of His word, therefore the bed to which you have gone up will not come down from it, for you shall surely die."
17
And the word of the LORD which He spoke to Elijah came to pass, and Jehoram reigned in his place in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, for he had no son.
18
And the rest of the words of Ahaziah, which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?
