King James Version

2 Kings • Chapter 3

1 And Jehoram the son of Ahab reigned over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigned twelve years. 2 And he did evil in the eyes of the Lord, only not like his father and like his mother, and he removed the pillar of Baal that his father had made. 3 Only in the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, who made Israel sin, did he cling; he did not turn away from it. 4 And Mesha king of Moab was a sheep breeder, and he delivered to the king of Israel one hundred thousand lambs and one hundred thousand rams with wool. 5 And it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that Moab rebelled against the king of Israel. 6 And King Jehoram went out on that day from Samaria and summoned all Israel. 7 And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, saying, "The king of Moab has rebelled against me; will you go with me to Moab to battle?" And he said, "I will go up; as you are, so am I; my people as your people, my horses as your horses." 8 And he said, "Where is the way we should go?" And he said, "The way through the wilderness of Edom." 9 And the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom, and they circled the way seven days, and there was no water for the camp and for the animals that were at their feet. 10 And the king of Israel said, “Alas, for the Lord has called for these three kings to deliver them into the hand of Moab.” 11 And Jehoshaphat said, "Is there not a prophet of the Lord here, that we may inquire of the Lord by him?" And one of the servants of the king of Israel answered and said, "Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah." 12 And Jehoshaphat said, "Is there not here a word of the Lord?" So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him. 13 And Elisha said to the king of Israel, “What do I have to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father and to the prophets of your mother.” And the king of Israel said to him, “No, for the Lord has called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.” 14 And Elisha said, "As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, if it were not for the presence of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, I would not look at you or see you." 15 And now take for me a musician, and it shall be when the musician plays that the hand of the Lord will be upon me. 16 And he said, "Thus says the Lord: This river has made hills, hills." 17 For thus says the Lord: You will not see wind, nor will you see rain, yet that river will be filled with water, and you will drink, you and your livestock and your animals. 18 And this will be easy in the eyes of the Lord, and He will give Moab into your hand. 19 And you shall strike every fortified city and every choice city and every good tree you shall cut down and all the springs of water you shall stop up and all the good land you shall ruin with stones. 20 And it was in the morning, at the time of the offering, and behold, water was coming from the direction of Edom, and the land was filled with water. 21 And all Moab heard that the kings had come up to fight against them, and they were distressed from every girded man and above, and they stood by the border. 22 And they rose early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the waters, and Moab saw opposite the waters that they were red like blood. 23 And they said, "This blood is the blood of the slain; the kings have been destroyed, and they struck each man his neighbor. And now, for the plunder of Moab." 24 And they came to the camp of Israel, and Israel rose up and struck Moab, and they fled from before them. And they came and struck her and killed Moab. 25 And the cities will be destroyed, and every good part they will throw down, each man with his stone, and they will fill it; and every spring of water will be stopped, and every good tree will fall until they leave stones of the wall of the carved work, and the beams will surround it and will smite it. 26 And the king of Moab saw that the battle was too strong for him, and he took with him seven hundred men wielding swords to break through to the king of Edom, but they could not. 27 And he took his firstborn son who would reign in his place and offered him as a burnt offering on the wall, and there was great anger against Israel, and they departed from him and returned to the land.
