King James Version

2 Kings • Chapter 7

1 And Elisha said, "Hear the word of the LORD: Thus says the LORD, 'Tomorrow about this time a seah of fine flour shall be sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria.'" 2 And the captain who was with the king answered the man of God and said, "Behold, the Lord is making windows in the heavens; could this thing be?" And he said, "You will see it with your eyes, but you will not eat from it." 3 And four men were lepers at the entrance of the gate, and they said to each other, "What are we doing sitting here until we die?" 4 If we say, "We will go to the city," and there is famine in the city and we die there; or if we sit here and die; now come, let us fall into the camp of Aram. If they spare our lives, we will live; and if they kill us, we will die. 5 And they arose at dusk to come to the camp of Aram, and they came to the edge of the camp of Aram, and behold, there was no man there. 6 And the Lord made to hear the camp of Aram the sound of chariots, the sound of horses, the sound of a great army; and each man said to his brother, "Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Egypt to come upon us." 7 And they rose up and fled at twilight, and they left their tents and their horses and their donkeys, the camp as it was, and they fled to their lives. 8 And the lepers came to the edge of the camp and they entered one tent, and they ate and they drank, and they took from there silver and gold and clothing, and they went and hid them. Then they returned and entered another tent and they took from there, and they went and hid. 9 And the man said to his neighbor, "We are not doing so today; this day is a day of good news, and we are silent and waiting until the morning light to find our sin. Now, let us go and tell the house of the king." 10 And they came and called to the gate of the city and they told them, saying, "We have come to the camp of Aram, and behold, there is no man there, and the voice of man, only the horses tied and the donkeys tied, and tents as they were." 11 And the doorkeepers called out and reported to the king’s house within. 12 And the king arose at night and said to his servants, "I will tell you what Aram has done to us; they know that we are hungry, and they have gone out from the camp to hide in the field, saying, 'When they come out of the city, we will capture them alive and go into the city.'" 13 And one of his servants answered and said, "Please let them take five of the remaining horses which are left in it; behold, they are like all the multitude of Israel that are left in it; behold, they are like all the multitude of Israel that have perished. Let us send and see." 14 And they took two horse-drawn chariots, and the king sent after the camp of Aram, saying, "Go and see." 15 And they went after them to the Jordan, and behold, all the way was full of garments and vessels that Aram had thrown away in their haste, and the messengers returned and told the king. 16 And the people went out and they plundered the camp of Aram, and it was a seah of fine flour for a shekel and two seahs of barley for a shekel, as the word of the Lord had said. 17 And the king appointed the man who leaned on his hand at the gate, and the people trampled him at the gate, and he died, as the man of God spoke, who spoke concerning the king's coming down to him. 18 And it happened, when the man of God spoke to the king, saying, "Two seahs of barley will be for a shekel, and a seah of fine flour will be for a shekel; it will be like this time tomorrow at the gate of Samaria." 19 And the third one answered the man of God and said, "Behold, the LORD is making windows in heaven; will this thing be?" And he said, "You will see it with your own eyes, but from there you will not eat." 20 And it was so for him, and the people trampled him in the gate, and he died.
