King James Version

Deuteronomy • Chapter 19

1 For the Lord your God will cut off the nations which the Lord your God is giving to you, and you will possess them and dwell in their cities and in their houses. 2 You shall set apart three cities for yourself in the midst of your land, which the Lord your God is giving you to possess. 3 Prepare a way for you, and you shall set the border of your land, which the LORD your God will give you, and it shall be a refuge there for every murderer. 4 And this is the word of the murderer who will flee there and live, who strikes his neighbor without knowledge and he is not his enemy from yesterday or the day before. 5 And if he comes with his friend into the forest to cut wood and his hand brings down the iron to cut the tree, and the iron slips from the tree and finds his friend and he dies, he shall flee to one of these cities and live. 6 Lest the avenger of blood pursue the murderer, for his heart will be hot, and he will overtake him, because the way is long, and he will strike down his soul, and there is no judgment of death for him, for he is not hated for him since yesterday or the day before. 7 Therefore, I command you to set apart three cities for yourself. 8 And if the Lord your God enlarges your border as He swore to your fathers and gives you all the land that He spoke to give to your fathers. 9 If you keep all this commandment to do it, which I command you today, to love the Lord your God and to walk in His ways all the days, you will add three cities for yourself on these three. 10 And you shall not pour out innocent blood in the midst of your land, which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance, and bloodguilt shall be upon you. 11 If a man hates his neighbor and lies in wait for him and rises against him and strikes him so that he dies, and he flees to one of these cities, 12 And the elders of his city shall send and take him from there and give him into the hand of the blood avenger and the dead. 13 You shall not have pity on him, and you shall purge the innocent blood from Israel, and it shall be well for you. 14 You shall not move your neighbor's boundary which the ancients established in the inheritance that you shall inherit in the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess. 15 A single witness shall not rise up against a man for any wrongdoing or for any sin in any sin that he may commit; on the testimony of two witnesses or on the testimony of three witnesses a matter shall stand. 16 For when a witness of violence rises against a man to testify against him in wrongdoing. 17 And two men shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges who shall be in those days. 18 And the judges shall investigate thoroughly, and behold, a false witness, the witness of falsehood answered against his brother. 19 And you shall do to him as he intended to do to his brother, and you shall purge the evil from your midst. 20 And the remnant will hear and be afraid, and will no longer do this evil thing in your midst. 21 And you shall not show pity; life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
