Exodus • Chapter 1

1 And these are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each man and his household came. 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah. 3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin. 4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. 5 And all the souls coming out of Jacob's thigh were seventy souls, and Joseph was in Egypt. 6 And Joseph died, and all his brothers, and all that generation. 7 And the children of Israel were fruitful and multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, and the land was filled with them. 8 And a new king arose over Egypt who did not know Joseph. 9 And he said to his people, "Behold, the people of the children of Israel are many and powerful compared to us." 10 The wise man may sharpen himself lest he increase, and it will be when they call for war, and he also adds to our haters and fights against us and will rise from the land. 11 And they set over me taskmasters to afflict me with burdens, and they built treasure cities for Pharaoh, Pithom and Raamses. 12 And as they oppress it, so it will increase and so it will spread, and they were distressed before the children of Israel. 13 And the Egyptians enslaved the children of Israel with rigor. 14 And they made their lives bitter with hard service in clay and bricks and in all manner of work in the field, all their service which they worked with them in rigor. 15 And the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of one was Shiphrah and the name of the second was Puah. 16 And he said, "When you help the Hebrew women give birth, and see them on the birthstools, if it is a boy, you shall put him to death; but if it is a girl, she shall live." 17 And the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had spoken to them, but they kept the boys alive. 18 And the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, "Why have you done this thing, and let the children live?" 19 And the midwives said to Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous; before the midwife comes to them, they have given birth." 20 And God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied and grew very strong. 21 And it was when the midwives feared God, that He made for them houses. 22 And Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, "Every boy that is born you shall throw into the river, and every girl you shall keep alive."
