Ezra • Chapter 3

1 And the seventh month came, and the children of Israel were in their cities, and the people gathered as one man to Jerusalem. 2 And Yeshua the son of Yozadak arose, and his brothers the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and his brothers, and they built the altar of the God of Israel to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the law of Moses, the man of God. 3 And they prepared the altar on their machines because in fear of them from the peoples of the lands, and they brought up the offerings to Yahweh, offerings in the morning and in the evening. 4 And they shall make the Feast of Tabernacles as it is written, and the daily burnt offering day by day in the number according to the ordinance of the matter day by day. 5 And after that, the regular burnt offering and for the new moons and for all the appointed times of the Lord, the sacred ones, and for everyone who voluntarily offers a freewill offering to the Lord. 6 On the first day of the seventh month, they began to offer burnt offerings to the Lord, and the temple of the Lord was not yet founded. 7 And they gave money to the stonecutters and to the artisans, and food and drink and oil to the Sidonians and to the Tyrians to bring cedar trees from Lebanon to the Sea of Joppa, according to the permission of Cyrus king of Persia upon them. 8 And in the second year of their coming to the house of God in Jerusalem, in the second month, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jozadak and the rest of their brothers the priests and the Levites and all those who had come from the captivity to Jerusalem, stood the Levites from twenty years old and upward to oversee the work of the house of Yahweh. 9 And Yeshua son of Jehozadak and his brothers, Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah, stood as one to assist those working on the service of the house of God, the sons of Chenadad, and their brothers the Levites. 10 And the builders set up the temple of the Lord, and the priests stood dressed in the trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with the cymbals to praise the Lord by the hand of David, king of Israel. 11 And they answered with praise and thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His mercy endures forever toward Israel. And all the people shouted a great shout in praise to the Lord upon the foundation of the house of the Lord. 12 And many of the priests and the Levites and the heads of the fathers, the old men who had seen the first house when it was founded, wept with a loud voice; and many shouted for joy. 13 And there is no one among the people who recognizes the sound of the shout of joy for the sound of the weeping of the people, for the people are shouting a great shout, and the sound is heard far away.
