King James Version

Genesis • Chapter 43

1 And the famine was severe in the land. 2 And it was when they had finished eating the leftover food that they had brought from Egypt, and he said to them, "Return, get us a little food." 3 And Judah said to me, "The witness has testified against us, saying, 'You shall not see my face unless your brother is with you.'" 4 If you will send your brother with us, we will go down and break bread for you. 5 And if you do not send, we will not go down; for the man said to us, "You will not see my face unless your brother is with you." 6 And Israel said, "Why have you done evil to me to tell the man that you still have a brother?" 7 And they said, “Saul has asked us about your ancestry, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have a brother? We will tell him according to these words; will he know that they say, ‘Bring your brother down’?” 8 And Judah said to Israel his father, "Send the boy with me, and we will rise and go, and we will live, and not die; both we and you and also our little ones." 9 I will be a guarantor for him; if I do not bring him to you and set him before you, I will bear the blame before you all the days. 10 For if we had not delayed, for now we returned this twice. 11 And he said to them, "Israel, your father, if so, then do this: take from the best of the land in your vessels and bring to the man a little balm and a little honey, spices and myrrh, nuts and almonds." 12 And you shall take silver from the hands of your brethren, and you shall return the silver that was placed in the mouths of your bags to your hands; perhaps it is a mistake. 13 And take your brothers and rise, return to the man. 14 And Almighty God will give you mercy before the man, and he will send your brother back and Benjamin; and I, as I have been bereaved, I am bereaved. 15 And the men took this offering and a second silver coin in their hands, and they stood up and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph. 16 And Joseph saw his brothers and said to the steward of his house, "Bring the men to the house and slaughter an animal and prepare it, for the men will eat with me at noon." 17 And the man did as Joseph had said, and the man brought the men to Joseph's house. 18 And the men were afraid because they were brought to Joseph’s house, and they said concerning the money that was returned in our sacks at the beginning, we are brought in to befall us and to fall upon us and to take us as servants and our donkeys. 19 And they approached the man who was over the house of Joseph and spoke to him at the entrance of the house. 20 And they said, "My lord, we will go down at first to buy food." 21 And when we came to the inn and opened our sacks, behold, the money of each man was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight; and we returned it in our hand. 22 And another silver we brought down in our hands to buy food; we did not know who put our money in our sacks. 23 And he said, "Peace be to you; do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has given you a treasure in your sacks; your money has come to me." And he brought out to them Simeon. 24 And the man brought the men to Joseph's house and gave them water, and they washed their feet, and he gave fodder to their donkeys. 25 And they prepared the offering until Joseph came at noon because they heard that they would eat bread there. 26 And Joseph came into the house, and they brought to him the gift that was in their hand, and they bowed down to him to the ground. 27 And he asked them about peace and said, "Is your father, the old man of whom you said, still alive?" 28 And they said, "Peace to your servant, to our father, still alive." And they bowed down and prostrated themselves. 29 And I lifted my eyes and saw my brother Benjamin, the son of my mother, and I said, "Is this your younger brother, of whom you said to me?" And he said, "God be gracious to you, my son." 30 And Joseph hurried because his compassion for his brother was stirred, and he sought to weep, and he went into the chamber and wept there. 31 And he washed his face, and he went out and restrained himself, and he said, "Put out the bread." 32 And they set aside for him alone and for them alone, and for the Egyptians who were eating with him alone; for the Egyptians could not eat bread with the Hebrews, for it was an abomination to the Egyptians. 33 And they sat before me, the firstborn like his birthright, and the younger like his youth, and the men wondered, each to his friend. 34 And he lifted the burdens from my face to them, and the burden of Benjamin was greater than all their burdens, five hundred of his hands, and they drank and got drunken with him.
