King James Version
Jeremiah • Chapter 20
1
And Pashhur the son of Immer the priest, who was chief officer in the house of the Lord, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things.
2
And Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet and put him in the stocks that were in the upper Benjamin gate, which was in the house of the Lord.
3
And it came to pass the next day that Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, and Jeremiah said to him, "The Lord did not call your name Pashhur, but rather Magor-Missabib."
4
For thus says the Lord: Behold, I am giving you as a refuge for you and for all your lovers, and they will fall by the sword of their enemies, and your eyes will see, and all Judah I will give into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will carry them away to Babylon and will strike them with the sword.
5
And I will give all the wealth of this city and all its labor and all its precious things and all the treasures of the kings of Judah into the hand of their enemies, and they will plunder them and take them and bring them to Babylon.
6
And you shall surely go into captivity, and all the inhabitants of your house shall go into exile, and you shall come to Babylon, and there you shall die, and there you shall be buried, you and all your lovers whom you have prophesied to falsely.
7
You have opened me, O Lord, and I was made strong; I have been able to laugh all day; everyone mocks me.
8
For as much as I speak, I will cry out, "Violence and plunder!" Because the word of the Lord has been to me for reproach and for derision all day long.
9
And I said, "I will not mention Him, nor will I speak any more in His name," but it was like a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I became weary of holding it in, and I could not.
10
For I have heard the gossip of many; terror is all around. Declare it and we will declare it. Every man, let him guard his peace. Perhaps he will be enticed, and we may prevail against him and take our revenge from him.
11
And the LORD is with me like a mighty warrior; therefore, my persecutors will stumble and not prevail; they will be greatly ashamed because they did not understand; their eternal shame will never be forgotten.
12
And the LORD of hosts tests the righteous; He sees the kidneys and the heart. I will see your vengeance upon them, for I have revealed my cause to You.
13
Sing to the LORD, praise the LORD, for He has delivered the soul of the needy from the hand of evildoers.
14
Cursed is the day on which I was born, the day on which my mother bore me, let it not be blessed.
15
Cursed is the man who has caused pain to his father by saying, "A son has been born to you, a male, rejoice in your joy."
16
And it shall be that the man, he who is like the cities which the Lord overturned, and he did not relent, and he heard a cry in the morning and a shout at noon.
17
That which you will not kill me from the womb, and she was to me my mother, my grave, and mercy was the conception of the world.
18
Why was I born from the womb to see toil and anguish, and to spend my days in shame?
