King James Version

Jeremiah • Chapter 28

1 And it came to pass in the year that was the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, that Hananiah the son of Azur the prophet, who was from Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the LORD in the presence of the priests and all the people, saying. 2 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. 3 After two years I will bring back to this place all the vessels of the house of the Lord that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took from this place and brought to Babylon. 4 And regarding Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim king of Judah, and all the exiles of Judah who are coming to Babylon, I am bringing them back to this place, declares the Lord, for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon. 5 And Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet in the presence of the priests and in the presence of all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord. 6 And Jeremiah the prophet said, "Amen, may the Lord do so; may the Lord fulfill your words that you have prophesied to bring back the vessels of the house of the Lord and all the exiles from Babylon to this place." 7 But listen, please, to this word that I am speaking in your ears and in the ears of all the people. 8 The prophets who were before me and before you from ancient times prophesied against many lands and great kingdoms for war and for disaster and for plague. 9 The prophet who prophesies for peace, when the word of the prophet comes to pass, then it will be known that the prophet was sent by the Lord in truth. 10 And Hananiah the prophet took the yoke off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it. 11 And Hananiah said in the presence of all the people, saying, "Thus says the Lord: So I will break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon within two more years from off the neck of all the nations." And Jeremiah the prophet went on his way. 12 And the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet, saying, 13 Go and say to Hananiah, thus says the LORD: You have broken wooden bars, and you have made in their place iron bars. 14 For thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all these nations to serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and they shall serve him; and I have also given him the beasts of the field. 15 And Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet, "Hear now, Hananiah, the Lord has not sent you, and you have made this people trust in a lie." 16 Therefore, thus says the Lord: Behold, I am sending you from upon the face of the earth this year; you shall die because you have turned away and spoken against the Lord. 17 And Hananiah the prophet died in that year in the seventh month.
