King James Version

Jeremiah • Chapter 49

1 To the children of Ammon, thus says the Lord: "Are there no sons for Israel, or is there no heir? Why then has their king taken possession of Gad, and his people settled in its cities?" 2 Therefore, behold, days are coming, declares the Lord, and I have heard the sound of a great cry of the children of Ammon, the noise of battle, and it shall be for a heap of ruins, and her daughters shall be set on fire, and Israel shall possess those who possessed him, says the Lord. 3 Wail, O Heshbon, for Ai is laid waste; cry out, daughters of Rabbah, gird yourselves with sackcloth, lament and run about in the dividers, for their king shall go into captivity, he and his princes together. 4 What will you boast about, O daughter of the rebellious one, who trusts in her treasures? Who will come to me? 5 Behold, I am bringing upon you fear, declares the Lord of Hosts, from all around you, and you will be scattered, each man before me, and there will be no gatherer for the fleeing. 6 And after that, I will restore the captivity of the children of Ammon, declares the Lord. 7 Thus says the LORD of hosts: There is no more wisdom in Teman; counsel has perished from the wise. 8 Flee, turn back, deepen to dwell, you inhabitants of Dan, for I have brought the time of judgment upon you. 9 If harvesters come to you, they will not leave behind any gleanings; if thieves come at night, they will destroy what is left. 10 For I have exposed Esau, I have revealed my secrets, and there is no hiding; his offspring, his brothers, and my neighbors cannot be. 11 I will support your orphans, and your widows will trust in me. 12 For thus says the Lord: Behold, those without justice will drink the cup; and you, you will be the one who is innocent; you will not be innocent, for you shall surely drink. 13 For I have sworn, declares the LORD, that it shall be for desolation, for reproach, for ruin, and for a curse; it shall be cities of desolation forever. 14 I have heard a report from the LORD and a messenger has been sent among the nations: "Gather and come up against her, and rise for battle." 15 For behold, I have made you small among the nations, despised among men. 16 Your arrogant behavior has led you into the wickedness of your heart, dwelling among the clefts of the rock. I will bring you down from there, as the Lord declares, just as an eagle raises its nest high. 17 And Edom shall be a desolation; everyone who passes by it shall be astonished and shall hiss at all its plagues. 18 Like the overturning of Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbors, says the Lord, no man shall dwell there, nor shall a son of man reside in it. 19 Behold, like a lion he will rise from the pride of the Jordan to a steadfast dwelling, for they will drive us away from it, and who will appoint for me? For who is like me, and who will declare to me, and who is this shepherd that will stand before me? 20 Therefore, listen to the counsel of the LORD that He has advised concerning Edom and the thoughts that He has thought concerning the inhabitants of Teman. If the young of the flock will not be dragged away, if He will not lay upon them their pasture. 21 From the sound of the terrible shaking, the earth cried out; the voice of it was heard in the sea of reeds. 22 Behold, as an eagle will soar and will flutter and will spread its wings over a young lion, and the heart of the mighty men of Edom will be like the heart of a woman in childbirth on that day. 23 To/Damascus, shame upon Hamath and Arpad, for they have heard a bad report; they melt in the sea; the worry cannot be quieted. 24 Raphah is Damascus; it has turned to flight, and trembling has seized it; distress and pangs have taken hold of it like a woman in labor. 25 How has the city of praise not been abandoned, the town of rejoicing? 26 Therefore the young men will fall in her streets, and all the men of war will be silenced on that day, declares the Lord of Hosts. 27 And I will set fire to the wall of Damascus, and it will consume the palaces of Ben Hadad. 28 To Kedar and to the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, struck, thus says the LORD: Rise up, go up against Kedar and destroy the sons of the east. 29 Their tents and their sheep will be taken, their curtains and all their utensils and their camels will be lifted for them, and they will be called around them, a dwelling from the surrounding area. 30 The fugitives were very much shaken; they deeply dwelt in the dwellings of Hazor, declares the Lord, for Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, has devised against you counsel and has thought against you a scheme. 31 Arise, go up to a people who are at ease, says the Lord; they shall not have doors and shall not lock in strongholds. 32 And their camels shall be for plunder, and the multitude of their cattle for spoil, and I will scatter them to every wind, and from all the corners I will bring their disaster, declares the Lord. 33 And it shall be a dwelling place of jackals, a desolation forever; no man shall dwell there, nor shall a son of man reside in it. 34 The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet concerning Elam at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying. 35 Thus says the LORD of hosts: Behold, I am breaking the bow of Elam, the beginning of their might. 36 And I will bring to Elam four winds from the four corners of heaven, and I will scatter them to all these winds; and there will not be a nation that will not come there, the outcasts of Elam. 37 And I will cause terror upon Elam before their enemies and before those who seek their lives, and I will bring upon them the evil of My fierce anger, says the LORD, and I will send the sword after them until I have consumed them. 38 And I will set my throne in Elam, and I will destroy from there king and princes, says the Lord. 39 And it shall be in the latter days, I will restore the captivity of Elam, says the LORD.
