Jeremiah • Chapter 7

1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying: 2 Stand at the gate of the house of the Lord and proclaim there this word and say, Hear the word of the Lord, all Judah who enter these gates to worship the Lord. 3 Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: "Improve your ways and your deeds, and I will dwell among you in this place." 4 Do not trust in the words of falsehood, saying, "The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, these are." 5 For if you do good, you will do good for your ways and for your deeds, if you will do justice between a man and between his neighbor. 6 You shall not oppress the stranger, the orphan, and the widow, and you shall not shed innocent blood in this place, and you shall not go after other gods for your own harm. 7 And I will dwell with you in this place, in the land that I gave to your ancestors from ancient times and forever. 8 Behold, you are trusting in lies for no benefit. 9 "Shall you steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense to Baal, and go after other gods that you have not known?" 10 And you shall come and stand before Me in this house which is called by My name, and you shall say, "We have been delivered to do all these abominations." 11 The cave of Paritzim was this house which is called by My name in your eyes; behold, I have seen, says the Lord. 12 For you all go now to my place which is in Shiloh, where I caused my name to dwell there at first, and see what I did to it because of the evil of my people Israel. 13 And now, because you have done all these deeds, says the Lord, I spoke to you early and spoke, but you did not listen; and I called you, and you did not answer. 14 And I will make for the house that is called by My name, in which you trust, and for the place that I gave to you and to your forefathers, as I made for Shiloh. 15 And I will cast you away from my face, as I have cast away all your brothers, all the seed of Ephraim. 16 And you, do not pray for this people, and do not raise cry and prayer for them, and do not plead with me, for I am not hearing you. 17 "Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?" 18 The sons gather wood, and the fathers set the fire, and the women knead dough to make offerings to the heavens, and they pour drink offerings to other gods in order to provoke me. 19 They are angering me, declares the LORD. Are they not ashamed of their behavior? 20 Therefore, thus says the Lord Yahweh: Behold, my anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place, upon man and upon beast, and upon the trees of the field and upon the fruit of the ground, and it will burn and it will not be quenched. 21 Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: "Your burnt offerings you bring, and eat the flesh." 22 For I did not speak to your ancestors, nor did I command them on the day I brought them out of the land of Egypt concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices. 23 For if I command you this thing, saying, "Listen to My voice, and I will be to you a God, and you will be for Me a people," and you will walk in all the way that I command you, so that it may go well with you. 24 And they did not listen and did not incline their ears, and they went in the counsel of their evil heart and became backturned and not forward. 25 From the day that your ancestors went out from the land of Egypt until this day, I have sent to you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending. 26 And they did not listen to Me and did not incline their ear, but they made their neck stiff; they were worse than their ancestors. 27 And you shall speak to them all these words, but they will not listen to you, and you shall call to them, but they will not answer you. 28 And you said to them, "This is the nation that did not listen to the voice of the Lord my God and did not accept correction; faith has perished, and it shall be cut off from their mouths." 29 Cut off your hair and throw it away, and raise a lamentation on the bare heights, for the Lord has rejected and forsaken the generation of His wrath. 30 For the sons of Judah have done the evil in my eyes, says the Lord; they have set their abominations in the house that is called by my name, to defile it. 31 And they built high places for the Tofet, which is in the Valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in fire, which I did not command, and it did not come into my heart. 32 Therefore, behold, days are coming, declares the Lord, and it will no longer be said, "The Taphhet and the Valley of the Son of Hinnom," but rather, "The Valley of Slaughter," and they will bury in Taphhet because there is no place. 33 And the carcass of this people shall be food for the birds of the heavens and for the beasts of the earth, and there shall be no one to frighten. 34 And I will put an end to the sounds of joy and the sounds of gladness, the sound of the bridegroom and the sound of the bride, for the land will become a desolation.
