King James Version

Jeremiah • Chapter 8

1 At that time, the declaration of the Lord, they will bring out the bones of the kings of Judah and the bones of its princes and the bones of the priests and the bones of the prophets and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem from their graves. 2 And they shall spread out for the sun and for the moon and for all the host of heaven which they loved and which they served and which they walked after and which they sought and which they bowed down to; they shall not be gathered nor buried; they shall be like dung on the face of the ground. 3 "And I will choose death over life for all the remnant of the survivors from this evil family in all the places where I have driven them away, says the Lord of Hosts." 4 And you shall say to them, Thus says the Lord: Will they fall and not rise? If they turn away, will they not return? 5 Why has this people, Jerusalem, turned back continually? They hold fast to deceit; they refuse to return. 6 I listened, and I heard; they do not speak thus; there is no one who is sorry for his wickedness, saying, "What have I done?" All of them turn back in their courses like a horse rushing into battle. 7 Also, the crane in the heavens knows its appointed times, and the turtle dove, and the swallow, and the thrush keep the time of their coming, but my people do not know the judgment of the Lord. 8 How do you say, "We are wise, and the law of the Lord is with us"? Indeed, behold, to deception has the pen of the deceivers made it. 9 The wise were put to shame; they were caught; behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD, and what wisdom do they have? 10 Therefore, I will give their wives to others, their fields to heirs, because from small to great, all are greedy for gain, from prophet to priest, all practice deception. 11 And they healed the daughter of the people, saying, "Peace, peace," and there is no peace. 12 They will be ashamed because they have committed an abomination; they will not be ashamed at all, and they will not know how to be humiliated. Therefore, they will fall among the fallen; at the time of their visitation, they will stumble, says the LORD. 13 I gather the gathering of the word of the LORD; there are no grapes on the vine, and there are no figs on the fig tree, and the leaf has withered, and I will give to them to pass away. 14 Why are we sitting? Assemble and let us go to the fortified cities and let us be there, for the Lord our God has condemned us and has given us water of gall, for we have sinned against the Lord. 15 Hope for peace and there is no good for a time of healing, and behold, in due time. 16 From Dan is heard the snorting of my horses; from the sound of the neighing of my mighty ones, the whole earth quakes, and they come and consume the land and its fullness, the city and its inhabitants. 17 For behold, I am sending among you serpents, vipers that have no charm, and they shall bite you, declares the Lord. 18 I am bringing my sorrow upon my heart. 19 Behold, a sound of the daughter of my people crying from a distant land: "The Lord is not in Zion; her king is not in her. Why have they provoked me with their idols, with worthless foreign things?" 20 The summer has passed, the harvest is ended, and we are not saved. 21 "Because of the broken daughter of my people, I have become dark; I have been made desolate." 22 Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then has the health of the daughter of my people not been restored?
