King James Version
Job • Chapter 1
1
There was a man in the land of Uz, his name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, fearing God and turning away from evil.
2
And seven sons and three daughters were born to him.
3
And he had livestock of seven thousand sheep and three thousand camels and five hundred pairs of oxen and five hundred female donkeys, and a very large number of servants. And that man was the greatest of all the people of the East.
4
And my sons shall go and make a feast in a man's house on a certain day, and they shall send and call for three of their brothers to eat and drink with them.
5
And it was when the days of the feast had circled, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose early in the morning and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, “Perhaps my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” Thus Job did continually.
6
And it was the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and the Satan also came among them.
7
And the LORD said to Satan, "From where do you come?" And Satan answered the LORD and said, "From roaming through the earth and walking back and forth in it."
8
And the LORD said to the Satan, “Have you set your heart against My servant Job? For there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man who fears God and turns away from evil.”
9
And the Satan answered the Lord and said, "Does Job fear God for nothing?"
10
Did you not bless his work and his house and all that belongs to him, and made his livestock fruitful in the land?
11
But now send forth your hand and touch all that he has, if he will not bless you in your face.
12
And the Lord said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your hand; only against him do not send your hand." And Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.
13
And it came to pass on the day that my sons and my daughters were eating and drinking wine in their brother's house, the firstborn.
14
And an angel came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing beside them."
15
And Sheba fell, and they took him, and the young men, they struck with the sword, and I alone escaped to tell you.
16
While this one is speaking, this one came and said, "The fire of God has fallen from heaven and consumed the sheep and the young men, and I alone have escaped to tell you."
17
While he was still speaking, this one came and said, "The Chaldeans set up three raiding parties and rushed upon the camels, and took them, and the young men they killed with the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you."
18
Until this one spoke and this one came and said, "Your sons and your daughters are eating and drinking wine in the house of their firstborn."
19
And behold, a great wind came from the direction of the wilderness, and it touched the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men, and they died; and I alone have escaped to tell you.
20
And Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell to the ground and worshiped.
21
And he said, "Naked I came out of my mother's womb, and naked I will return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord."
22
In all this, Job did not sin and did not give God any dishonor.
