King James Version

John • Chapter 19

1 Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. 2 And the soldiers wove a crown of thorns and placed it on his head, and they wrapped him in a purple cloak, 3 And they came to him and said: Hail, king of the Jews; and they gave him blows. 4 And Pilate went out again and said to them, "Behold, I bring him out to you, that you may know that I find no reason in him." 5 Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And he said to them, "Behold the man." 6 When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, saying, "Crucify him, crucify him." Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no fault in him." 7 The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and according to the law, he ought to die because he made himself the Son of God." 8 When Pilate heard this word, he was even more afraid. 9 And he entered the pretorium again and said to Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave him no answer. 10 Pilate therefore said to him, "Are you not speaking to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and I have authority to crucify you?" 11 Jesus answered him, "You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given to you from above; therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin." 12 From this, Pilate sought to release him; but the Jews cried out, saying, "If you release this man, you are not a friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar." 13 Therefore, when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside and sat down on the judgment seat in a place called Gabbatha, in Hebrew Lithostrotos. 14 Now it was the preparation of the Passover, about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, "Behold, your king." 15 So they cried out, "Take him away, take him away, crucify him." Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your king?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar." 16 Then he delivered him to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus. 17 And carrying his cross, he went out to the place called the Skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha. 18 Where they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus in the middle. 19 Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the cross; it was written: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. 20 Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 Therefore, the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate: "Do not write, 'The king of the Jews,' but that he said, 'I am king of the Jews.'" 22 Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written." 23 So the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part, and the tunic. Now the tunic was seamless, woven from the top throughout. 24 Then they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it will be," so that the scripture might be fulfilled that says: "They divided my garments among themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots." Therefore the soldiers did these things. 25 But standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 Jesus therefore, seeing his mother and the disciple standing by whom he loved, says to his mother, "Woman, behold your son." 27 Then he says to the disciple, "Behold, your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her to his own. 28 After this, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, He says: "I thirst." 29 A vessel was standing full of vinegar; they then brought a sponge full of the vinegar and put it on a hyssop branch to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished," and bowing his head, he gave up the spirit. 31 So the Jews, since it was preparation day, in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a great day), asked Pilate to have their legs broken and to be taken away. 32 Then the soldiers came, and they broke the legs of the one and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33 And when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately there came out blood and water. 35 And the one who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true, and that one knows that he tells the truth, so that you also may believe. 36 For this happened so that the Scripture might be fulfilled: "Not a bone of him shall be broken." 37 And again another scripture says: They will look on him whom they pierced. 38 After these things, Joseph from Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate to take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate permitted it. Therefore, he came and took the body. 39 And Nicodemus also came, who had gone to him by night for the first time, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about one hundred pounds. 40 They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the custom among the Jews for burial. 41 There was in the place where he was crucified a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been laid. 42 Therefore, because of the preparation of the Jews, since the tomb was nearby, they placed Jesus there.
