King James Version
Judges • Chapter 1
1
And it was after the death of Joshua that the children of Israel asked of the LORD, saying, "Who shall go up for us first to fight against the Canaanites?"
2
And the Lord said, "Judah shall go up; here I have given the land into his hand."
3
And Judah said to Simeon his brother, "Come up with me into my lot, and we will fight against the Canaanite; and I will go as well with you into your lot." And Simeon went with him.
4
And Judah went up, and the Lord gave the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hands, and they struck them at Bezek, ten thousand men.
5
And they found my lord in Bezek, and they fought against him and struck down the Canaanites and the Perizzites.
6
And my lord Adoni-bezek fled, and they pursued after him, and they caught him and cut off his thumbs and his big toes.
7
And my lord, Bezek, said: “Seventy kings with their thumbs and their big toes cut off were gathering scraps under my table; as I have done, so God has repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.
8
And the sons of Judah fought in Jerusalem, and they captured it and struck it with the sword, and they burned the city with fire.
9
And afterward the sons of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who dwell in the hill country and in the Negev and in the lowland.
10
And Judah went to the Canaanite who dwelled in Hebron, and the name of Hebron formerly was Kiryat Arba, and they struck down Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai.
11
And he went from there to the inhabitants of Debir, and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher.
12
And Caleb said, "Whoever attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it, I will give him my daughter Achsah as a wife."
13
And Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb the younger, captured her, and he gave him Achsah his daughter as a wife.
14
And it happened when she came, and she urged him to Sheol from her father in the field, and she sank down from upon the donkey, and he said to her, "What is it with you?"
15
And he said to him, "Give me a blessing, for you have given me the land of the Negev, and you shall give me springs of water." And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.
16
And the sons of Kenite, the father-in-law of Moses, went up from the city of palm trees to the sons of Judah in the wilderness of Judah, which is in the Negev of Arad, and he went and settled among the people.
17
And Judah went with his brother Simeon, and they struck the Canaanite who was living in Zephath, and they devoted it to destruction, and he called the name of the city Hormah.
18
And Judah captured Gaza and its territory, and Ashkelon and its territory, and Ekron and its territory.
19
And the LORD was with Judah, and he took possession of the mountain, for he did not drive out the inhabitants of the valley because they had iron chariots.
20
And they gave Hebron to Caleb as Moses had spoken, and he drove out from there the three sons of the Anak.
21
And the Jebusite who dwells in Jerusalem, the sons of Benjamin did not drive out, and the Jebusite dwells with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem until this day.
22
And they also went up from the house of Joseph to Bethel, and the LORD was with them.
23
And they left the house of Joseph in Bethel, and the name of the city before was Luz.
24
And the guards saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him, "Show us please the entrance to the city, and we will deal kindly with you."
25
And they saw the entrance of the city and struck the city with the edge of the sword, and they sent away the man and all his family.
26
And the man went to the land of the Hittites and built a city and called its name Luz; it is its name to this day.
27
And Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shan and its daughters, and Taanach and its daughters, and the inhabitants of Dor and its daughters, and the inhabitants of Ibleam and its daughters, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and its daughters; and the Canaanite chose to dwell in that land.
28
And it was when Israel became strong, he put the Canaanite to forced labor, but he did not drive him out.
29
And Ephraim did not drive out the Canaanite who dwelt in Gezer, and the Canaanite dwelt in the midst of it in Gezer.

34
And the Amorites pressed the sons of Dan into the hill country, for they did not allow them to descend to the valley.
35
And Joel the Amorite said to dwell on the mountain of Cherech in Aijalon and in Shaalabim, and the hand of the house of Joseph became heavy, and they became a burden.
36
And the boundary of the Amorites is from the ascent of Akrabbim to the rock and upward.
