King James Version

Luke • Chapter 12

1 When the myriads of the crowd had gathered together so that they were trampling on one another, he began to speak first to his disciples: "Beware of yourselves from the leaven, which is hypocrisy, of the Pharisees." 2 Nothing that is covered will not be revealed, and what is hidden will not be known. 3 What you have said in darkness will be heard in the light, and what you whispered in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the rooftops. 4 But I say to you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that have nothing more they can do. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear; fear the one who after he has killed has authority to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear him. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two assaria? And not one of them is forgotten before God. 7 But even the hairs of your head are all counted; do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. 8 But I say to you, everyone who confesses me before men, him will the Son of Man confess before the angels of God. 9 But whoever denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven. 11 But when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities, do not worry about how or what you should defend yourselves or what you should say; 12 For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that hour what you ought to say. 13 And someone from the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." 14 But he said to him, "Man, who set me as a judge or arbitrator over you?" 15 And he said to them, "See and be on guard against all greed, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." 16 And he spoke a parable to them, saying: A certain rich man's land produced abundantly. 17 And he reasoned within himself, saying, What shall I do, for I have no place to gather my fruits? 18 And he said: I will do this; I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will gather all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul: Soul, you have many good things laid up for many years; rest, eat, drink, be merry. 20 And God said to him, "Fool, this night your soul is required of you; and what you have prepared, to whom will it be?" 21 Thus the one gathering treasure for himself and not rich toward God. 22 And he said to his disciples, "For this reason I say to you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will wear." 23 For the soul is more than food, and the body is more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens, that they neither sow nor reap, they have no storehouse nor barn, and God feeds them; how much more valuable are you than the birds. 25 And who of you by being anxious can add a cubit to his stature? 26 If then you cannot even do the least, why are you anxious about the rest? 27 Consider the lilies how they grow; they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 28 But if God so clothes the grass that is in the field today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more you, O you of little faith. 29 And you, do not seek what you will eat and what you will drink, and do not be anxious. 30 For all these things the nations of the world seek, but your Father knows that you need these things. 31 But seek His kingdom, and these things shall be added to you. 32 Do not fear, little flock, for it has pleased your Father to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions and give alms; make for yourselves purses that do not grow old, a treasure unfailing in the heavens, where thief does not draw near and moth does not destroy. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 35 Let your loins be girded and your lamps burning. 36 And you, being like men waiting for their lord to return from the wedding feast, that when he comes and knocks, they may open to him immediately. 37 Blessed are those servants whom the lord will find awake when he comes; truly, I say to you, that he will gird himself and have them recline at the table, and he will come and serve them. 38 Blessed are those if he comes in the second or in the third watch and finds it so. 39 But know this, that if the householder had known at what hour the thief comes, he would not have allowed his house to be broken into. 40 And you also be ready, for in the hour that you do not expect, the Son of Man comes. 41 And Peter said, "Lord, are you speaking this parable to us or to all?" 42 And the Lord said: Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the lord will appoint over his household to give them their food in due season? 43 Blessed is that servant whom his lord, coming, will find doing so. 44 Truly I say to you that he will set him over all his belongings. 45 But if that servant says in his heart, "My master is delaying to come," and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, 46 The lord of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in two and will place his portion with the unbelievers. 47 But that servant who knew his lord's will and did not prepare or do according to his will will be beaten with many stripes. 48 But the one who did not know and did things deserving of blows will be beaten with few. And to everyone to whom much was given, much will be required from him; and from the one to whom much was entrusted, they will ask more of him. 49 I have come to cast fire upon the earth, and what will I if it has already been kindled? 50 I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how am I distressed until it is accomplished. 51 Do you think that I came to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. 52 For there will be five in one house divided, three against two and two against three. 53 Father will be divided against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law. 54 He also said to the crowds: When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately say that a rainstorm is coming, and it happens like this. 55 And when a south wind blows, say that it will be hot, and it happens. 56 Hypocrites, you know how to discern the face of the earth and of the sky, but how is it that you do not know how to discern this time? 57 But why do you not judge what is right even from yourselves? 58 For as you go with your adversary to the magistrate, while on the way make an effort to be released from him, lest he drag you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and the officer throw you into prison. 59 I tell you, you will not leave there until you have paid the last penny.
