Malachi • Chapter 1

1 The burden of the word of the Lord to Israel by the hand of Malachi. 2 I have loved you, says the LORD. But you say, "How have you loved us?" Was not Esau Jacob's brother? says the LORD. Yet I have loved Jacob. 3 And I hated Esau and I made his mountains desolate and I gave his heritage to the jackals of the wilderness. 4 For when you say, "Edom, we have been devastated, and we will return and rebuild the ruins," thus says the Lord of Hosts: "They will build, but I will tear down, and they will be called the territory of wickedness, and the people against whom the Lord is enraged forever." 5 And your eyes will see, and you will say, "The Lord is great beyond the border of Israel." 6 A son honors a father, and if I am a master, where is my fear? says Yahweh of Hosts to you, O priests who despise my name. And you say, "In what way have we despised your name?" 7 You present unclean bread on My altar, and you say, "In what have we defiled You?" By your saying, "The table of the LORD is contemptible." 8 And when you bring a blind sacrifice, is it not evil? And when you bring a lame or sick sacrifice, is it not evil? Present it now to your governor; will he be pleased with you or will he show you favor? says the LORD of hosts. 9 And now, please turn the face of God and let us be gracious from your hand; was this the face that was to be lifted from you? Thus says the Lord of Hosts. 10 Who among you will close the doors so that you do not light My altar for nothing? I have no pleasure in you, says the LORD of Hosts, and I will not accept a meal offering from your hand. 11 For from the rising of the sun to its setting, great is my name among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name and a pure offering; for my name is great among the nations, says the LORD of hosts. 12 And you profane it by your words, "The table of the Lord is defiled, and what is its food despised." 13 "And you shall say, 'Behold, what a weariness!' And you have despised it, says the LORD of hosts, and you have brought the stolen and the lame and the sick, and you have brought the grain offering. Will I accept this from your hand? says the LORD." 14 "Cursed is the eater, and there is a male in his flock, and a vow and a sacrificial offering to the Lord, for I am a great King, says the Lord of Hosts, and My name is feared among the nations."
