King James Version

Matthew • Chapter 1

1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham. 2 Abraham begot Isaac, and Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers. 3 Judas fathered Perez and Zerah by Tamar; Perez fathered Hezron, and Hezron fathered Aram. 4 Aram begot Amminadab, Amminadab begot Nahshon, Nahshon begot Salmon. 5 Salmon begot Boaz from Rahab, Boaz begot Obed from Ruth, Obed begot Jesse. 6 Jesse fathered David the king. David fathered Solomon by the wife of Uriah. 7 Solomon begat Rehoboam, Rehoboam begat Abijah, Abijah begat Asa. 8 Asaph begot Josaphat, and Josaphat begot Joram, and Joram begot Uziah. 9 Uzziah begot Jotham, and Jotham begot Ahaz, and Ahaz begot Hezekiah. 10 Hezekiah begot Manasseh, Manasseh begot Amos, Amos begot Josiah. 11 Josiah begot Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the Babylonian exile. 12 After the Babylonian exile, Jeconiah begot Shealtiel, and Shealtiel begot Zerubbabel. 13 Zerubbabel begot Abiud, Abiud begot Eliakim, Eliakim begot Azor. 14 Azor begot Sadok, and Sadok begot Achim, and Achim begot Elioud. 15 Eliud fathered Eleazar, and Eleazar fathered Matthan, and Matthan fathered Jacob. 16 And Jacob begot Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. 17 Therefore, all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ are fourteen generations. 18 The birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: When His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 19 But Joseph, her husband, being righteous and not wanting to disgrace her, intended to divorce her secretly. 20 But while he was thinking about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying: Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. 22 All this has come to pass so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled. 23 Behold, the virgin shall conceive in her womb and bear a son, and they will call his name Emmanuel, which is translated, God with us. 24 And Joseph, having risen from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took his wife. 25 And she did not know him until she gave birth to a son; and she named his name Jesus.
