King James Version
Matthew • Chapter 14
1
At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the report about Jesus.
2
And he said to his children: This is John the Baptist; he has been raised from the dead, and for this reason the powers work in him.
3
For Herod had seized John and bound him, and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.
4
For John said to him: "It is not lawful for you to have her."
5
And wanting to kill him, he feared the crowd, because they held him as a prophet.
6
And when the days of Herod had come, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst and pleased Herod.
7
Wherefore, with an oath, he promised her to give whatever she might ask.
8
And she, having been prompted by her mother, said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist."
9
And the king, being troubled because of the oaths and those reclining with him, ordered that it be given.
10
And having sent, he beheaded John in the prison.
11
And his head was raised on a plate and given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.
12
And coming up, his disciples took the body and buried it, and coming, they reported to Jesus.
13
And when Jesus heard, he withdrew from there by boat to a desolate place by himself; and when the crowds heard, they followed him on foot from the towns.
14
And having come out, he saw a great crowd, and he had compassion for them and healed their sick.
15
But when evening had come, the disciples approached him, saying, "The place is desolate, and the hour is already past; dismiss the crowds so that they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves."
16
But Jesus said to them, "They do not need to go away; you give them something to eat."
17
But they said to him, "We have here only five loaves and two fish."
18
But he said, "Bring them here to me."
19
And He instructed the crowds to recline on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven, blessed them, and breaking them gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.
20
And they all ate and were satisfied, and they took up the leftover fragments twelve baskets full.
21
But those eating were men about five thousand, excluding women and children.
22
And immediately he compelled the disciples to get into the boat and go before him to the other side, until he dismissed the crowds.
23
And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain to pray alone. And when evening had come, he was there alone.
24
But the ship was already a considerable distance from the land, being tormented by the waves, for the wind was contrary.
25
And in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them walking on the sea.
26
But the disciples, seeing him walking on the sea, were troubled, saying that it is a ghost, and from fear they cried out.
27
And immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying: Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.
28
And Peter answered him, saying, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters."
29
But he said, "Come." And descending from the boat, Peter walked on the waters and came to Jesus.
30
But seeing the strong wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying: Lord, save me.
31
Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him and said to him, "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"
32
And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
33
And those in the boat worshiped him, saying: Truly, you are the Son of God.
34
And having crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.
35
And having recognized him, the men of that place sent into all the surrounding region, and they brought to him all who were sick.
36
And they begged him to let them only touch the fringe of his garment; and as many as touched it were healed.
