King James Version
Matthew • Chapter 16
1
And the Pharisees and Sadducees approached, testing him, asked him to show them a sign from heaven.
2
But he answered them, "When evening comes, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.'"
3
And in the morning: Today is winter, for the sky is gloomy and burning. You know how to distinguish the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times.
4
A wicked and adulterous generation seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. And leaving them, he departed.
5
And the disciples came to the other side and forgot to take bread.
6
But Jesus said to them, "See and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
7
But they were reasoning among themselves, saying that we have taken no bread.
8
But Jesus, knowing, said: Why do you reason among yourselves, O you of little faith, that you did not receive loaves?
9
Do you not yet understand, nor do you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up?
10
And did you not take the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets?
11
How do you not understand that I was not speaking about bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
12
Then they understood that he was not saying to beware of the leaven of the bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
13
And Jesus came into the regions of Caesarea Philippi and asked his disciples, saying, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?"
14
And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others say Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
15
He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
16
Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
17
And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father who is in heaven."
18
And I say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.
19
I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
20
Then he ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he is the Christ.
21
From that time, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.
22
And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying: "Far be it from you, Lord; this shall never happen to you."
23
But he turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan; you are a hindrance to me, for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of men."
24
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone wants to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me."
25
For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
26
For what will it benefit a person if he gains the whole world, but loses his own soul? Or what will a person give in exchange for his soul?
27
For the Son of Man is about to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will repay each one according to his deeds.
28
Amen, I tell you that there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.
