King James Version

Matthew • Chapter 19

1 And it came to pass that when Jesus had finished these words, he departed from Galilee and went to the borders of Judea beyond the Jordan. 2 And many crowds followed him, and he healed them there. 3 And the Pharisees approached him, testing him and saying, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason?" 4 And he answered, "Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female?" 5 And he said: For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let not man separate. 7 They say to him, "What then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?" 8 He says to them that Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it has not been so. 9 But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife not for sexual immorality and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. 10 The disciples say to him: If this is the cause of a man with a woman, it is not advantageous to marry. 11 But he said to them, "Not all can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given." 12 For there are eunuchs who were born so from their mother's womb, and there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who is able to accept this should accept it. 13 Then children were brought to him so that he would lay his hands on them and pray; but the disciples rebuked them. 14 But Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven." 15 And having laid his hands on them, he went away from there. 16 And behold, one came to him and said, "Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?" 17 But he said to him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? There is one who is good. If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments." 18 He says to him, "Which ones?" Jesus said, "You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness." 19 Honor your father and your mother, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself. 20 The young man said to him, "All these I have kept; what do I still lack?" 21 Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven, and come, follow me." 22 And when the young man heard the word, he went away saddened, for he had many possessions. 23 But Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly I say to you that a rich person will enter with difficulty into the kingdom of heaven." 24 Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God. 25 And when the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?" 26 And Jesus looked at them and said, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” 27 Then Peter answered and said to him, "Look, we have left everything and followed you; what then will there be for us?" 28 But Jesus said to them, "Truly I say to you, that you who have followed me in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you will also sit on twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel." 29 And everyone who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for the sake of my name will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. 30 Many will be first who will be last, and last who will be first.
