King James Version

Matthew • Chapter 2

1 When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, behold, magi came from the east to Jerusalem. 2 Saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east and have come to worship him." 3 And when King Herod heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 And having gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ is born. 5 And they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet." 6 And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you shall come a leader who will shepherd my people Israel. 7 Then Herod secretly called the Magi and ascertained from them the time of the appearing of the star. 8 And having sent them to Bethlehem, he said: "Go and search carefully about the child; and when you find him, announce to me, so that I also may come and worship him." 9 And when they heard the king, they went, and behold, the star which they had seen in the east went before them, until it came and stood over where the child was. 10 And when they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. 11 And when they had come into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and falling down they worshiped him; and opening their treasures, they presented gifts to him, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed into their own country by another way. 13 But when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph, saying, "Get up, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child to destroy him." 14 And he arose, took the child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt. 15 And he was there until the death of Herod; that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, "Out of Egypt I called my son." 16 Then Herod, seeing that he was mocked by the magi, was very angry, and sending forth he killed all the boys in Bethlehem and in all its districts from two years old and under, according to the time he had learned from the magi. 17 Then what was said by the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled. 18 A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation and great mourning; Rachel weeping for her children, and she did not want to be comforted because they are not. 19 And after Herod had died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt. 20 Saying: "Rise, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those seeking the child's life have died." 21 But he arose and took the child and his mother and entered into the land of Israel. 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea instead of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there; and being warned in a dream, he withdrew into the regions of Galilee. 23 And having come, he dwelt in a city called Nazareth, so that what was spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.
