King James Version
Matthew • Chapter 20
1
For the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.
2
And having agreed with the workers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
3
And having gone out about the third hour, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace.
4
And he said to them, "Go you also into the vineyard, and whatever is just, I will give you."
5
But they went away. Again, going out around the sixth and ninth hour, he did likewise.
6
And about the eleventh, he went out and found others standing, and he says to them, "Why have you been standing here all day idle?"
7
They said to him, "No one has hired us." He said to them, "Go you also into the vineyard."
8
And when evening had come, the lord of the vineyard said to his steward, "Call the laborers and give them their wages, beginning from the last to the first."
9
And having come, those around the eleventh hour received a denarius each.
10
And when the first came, they thought that they would receive more; and they also received each one a denarius.
11
And having received it, they murmured against the householder.
12
Saying: These last men worked one hour, and you made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the heat.
13
And he answered one of them, “Friend, I am not wronging you; did you not agree with me for a denarius?”
14
Take your own and go; I want to give to this last one as to you.
15
Is it not lawful for me to do what I want with my own? Or is your eye evil because I am good?
16
So the last will be first, and the first last.
17
And Jesus, going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples aside and said to them along the way:
18
Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death.
19
And they will deliver him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge and to crucify, and on the third day he will be raised.
20
Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee approached him with her sons, worshiping and asking something from him.
21
But he said to her, "What do you want?" She says to him, "Say that these two sons of mine may sit, one on your right and one on your left, in your kingdom."
22
And Jesus answered and said: You do not know what you are asking; are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink? They said to him: We are able.
23
He said to them, "You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right and at my left is not mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father."
24
And hearing this, the ten were indignant about the two brothers.
25
But Jesus, having called them together, said: "You know that the rulers of the nations lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them."
26
It shall not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant.
27
And whoever wants to be first among you shall be your servant.
28
Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.
29
And as they went out from Jericho, a large crowd followed him.
30
And behold, two blind men sitting by the road, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out saying, "Lord, have mercy on us, son of David."
31
But the crowd rebuked them to be silent; but they cried out all the more, saying, "Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David."
32
And Jesus stood and called them and said: What do you want me to do for you?
33
They say to him, "Lord, that our eyes may be opened."
34
Moved with compassion, Jesus touched their eyes, and immediately they received their sight and followed him.
