King James Version

Matthew • Chapter 23

1 Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and his disciples. 2 Saying, "The scribes and the Pharisees sat on the seat of Moses." 3 Therefore, all that they say to you, do and keep, but do not do according to their works, for they say and do not do. 4 They bind heavy burdens and lay them on the shoulders of men, but they themselves do not want to move them with their finger. 5 But all their works they do to be seen by men; for they broaden their phylacteries and lengthen the fringes. 6 They love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues. 7 And the greetings in the marketplaces and to be called by men: Rabbi. 8 But you should not be called Rabbi; for one is your Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 And do not call anyone your father on earth, for you have one Father, the heavenly one. 10 And do not be called teachers, for one is your teacher, the Christ. 11 But the one who is greater among you will be your servant. 12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. 13 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you shut the kingdom of heaven before men; for you do not enter, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. 14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. 15 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you traverse sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves. 16 Woe to you, blind guides, who say: Whoever swears by the temple is nothing, but whoever swears by the gold of the temple is obligated. 17 Fools and blind, for which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold? 18 And whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing, but whoever swears by the gift that is upon it is obligated. 19 Blind ones, for what is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift? 20 The one who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything upon it. 21 And the one who swears in the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. 22 And the one swearing in heaven swears by the throne of God and by the one sitting upon it. 23 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law, justice and mercy and faith; it was necessary to do these things and not neglect the others. 24 Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel. 25 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence. 26 Pharisee, blind one, first clean what is within the cup and the dish, so that the outside of it may also become clean. 27 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead bones and all uncleanness. 28 Thus, you also appear righteous to men outwardly, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. 29 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, 30 And say: If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in the blood of the prophets. 31 So you testify to yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 And you have filled up the measure of your fathers. 33 You serpents, generation of vipers, how will you escape from the judgment of hell? 34 Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city. 35 That on you may come all righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous to the blood of Zachariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation. 37 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to her—how often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing? 38 Behold, your house is left to you desolate. 39 For I say to you, you will not see me from now on until you say: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
