King James Version
Matthew • Chapter 26
1
And it came to pass, when Jesus finished all these words, he said to his disciples;
2
You know that after two days the Passover takes place, and the Son of Man is handed over to be crucified.
3
Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the courtyard of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas.
4
And they conspired to seize Jesus by treachery and to kill him.
5
And they were saying: "Not during the festival, so that there will not be a disturbance among the people."
6
And while Jesus was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,
7
A woman approached him having an alabaster jar of precious ointment and poured it upon his head as he was reclining.
8
And when the disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, "Why this waste?"
9
For this could be sold for much and given to the poor.
10
But Jesus knowing said to them: Why are you troubling the woman? For she has done a good work for me.
11
For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.
12
For she has poured this ointment on my body to prepare me for burial.
13
Amen, I tell you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed throughout the whole world, what she has done will be spoken of in her memory.
14
Then one of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests.
15
He said: "What do you want to give me, and I will deliver him to you?" And they set for him thirty silver pieces.
16
And from that time, he sought an opportunity to betray him.
17
On the first day of the Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?"
18
And he said: Go into the city to a certain man and say to him: The teacher says: My time is near; I will keep the Passover with my disciples at your house.
19
And the disciples did as Jesus instructed them, and they prepared the Passover.
20
And when evening had come, he reclined with the twelve disciples.
21
And while they were eating, he said, "Truly I say to you, one of you will betray me."
22
And being very sad, they began to say to him, each one: Am I not the one, Lord?
23
But he answered and said, "The one who has dipped his hand with me in the dish, this one will betray me."
24
The Son of Man goes as it has been written about him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for him if that man had not been born.
25
Judas who was betraying him answered and said, “Am I not, Rabbi?” He says to him, “You have said.”
26
While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it, he broke it and gave it to the disciples, saying: "Take, eat; this is my body."
27
And taking a cup and giving thanks, he gave it to them, saying: Drink from it, all of you.
28
For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
29
But I say to you, I will not drink from now on of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.
30
And having praised, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
31
Then Jesus says to them, "All of you will be offended because of me this night, for it is written: 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'"
32
After I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.
33
And Peter answered him, "Even if all are offended because of you, I will never be offended."
34
Jesus said to him, "Truly I say to you, that this night before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times."
35
Peter said to him, "Even if I must die with you, I will never deny you." Likewise, all the disciples said.
36
Then Jesus comes with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he says to the disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."
37
And taking Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and distressed.
38
Then he says to them: My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here and watch with me.
39
And going a little further, he fell on his face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet not as I will, but as you will."
40
And he comes to the disciples and finds them sleeping, and says to Peter: "So you could not stay awake one hour with me?"
41
Stay awake and pray, so that you do not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
42
Again going away a second time, he prayed, saying: "My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, let your will be done."
43
And having come again, he found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.
44
And having left them, he went away again and prayed, saying the same thing a third time.
45
Then he comes to the disciples and says to them, "Sleep now and rest; behold, the hour has come and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners."
46
Awake, let us go; behold, he who delivers me is near.
47
And while he was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs from the chief priests and elders of the people.
48
And the one betraying him gave them a sign, saying, "Whomever I kiss, he is the one; seize him."
49
And immediately coming to Jesus, he said: Greetings, rabbi; and he kissed him.
50
But Jesus said to him, "Friend, why are you here?" Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him.
51
And behold, one of those with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, and striking the servant of the high priest, he cut off his ear.
52
Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword."
53
Or do you think that I cannot call upon my Father, and He will immediately provide for me more than twelve legions of angels?
54
How then must the scriptures be fulfilled that it must happen in this way?
55
At that hour, Jesus said to the crowds, "As if you have come out against a robber with swords and sticks to seize me? Every day I was sitting in the temple teaching, and you did not arrest me."
56
All this has happened so that the scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him and fled.
57
And they who had seized Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered.
58
But Peter followed him from afar until the courtyard of the high priest, and having entered inside, he sat with the servants to see the end.
59
But the high priests and the whole council were seeking false testimony against Jesus so that they might put him to death.
60
And I did not find many who came forward as false witnesses. But later two came forward.
61
They said: This one said: I am able to destroy the temple of God and in three days to rebuild it.
62
And the high priest stood up and said to him, "Do you not answer anything? What are these men testifying against you?"
63
But Jesus remained silent. And the high priest said to him, "I adjure you by the living God that you tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God."
64
Jesus said to him, "You have said it; but I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of power and coming on the clouds of heaven."
65
Then the high priest tore his garments, saying: "He has blasphemed; what further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, now you have heard the blasphemy."
66
What do you think? They answered and said: He is deserving of death.
67
Then they spat in his face and struck him, and others slapped him.
68
Saying: Prophesy to us, Christ, who is it that struck you?
69
But Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard; and a servant girl came to him, saying, "And you were with Jesus of Galilee."
70
But he denied it before all, saying, "I do not know what you are saying."
71
And having gone out to the gateway, he saw him and said to those there, "This man was with Jesus of Nazareth."
72
And again he denied with an oath that he does not know the man.
73
After a little while, the bystanders approached and said to Peter, “Truly you are one of them; for your speech betrays you.”
74
Then he began to curse and swear that he did not know the man. And immediately a rooster crowed.
75
And Peter remembered the word of Jesus that he said, "Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times," and going outside, he wept bitterly.
