Matthew • Chapter 27

1 But when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. 2 And having bound him, they led him away and delivered him to Pilate the governor. 3 Then Judas, who was betraying him, seeing that he was condemned, repented and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and elders. 4 Saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood." But they said, "What is that to us? You see to it." 5 And throwing the silver coins into the temple, he went away, and having gone, hanged himself. 6 But the chief priests took the silver and said, "It is not lawful to put it into the treasury, since it is the price of blood." 7 And taking counsel, they bought from them the Field of the Potter for a burial place for foreigners. 8 Therefore, that field was called the Field of Blood until today. 9 Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled, saying: "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the valued one whom they valued from the sons of Israel." 10 And they gave it into the field of the potter, as the Lord had commanded me. 11 And Jesus stood before the governor; and the governor asked him, saying, "Are you the king of the Jews?" And Jesus said, "You say so." 12 And while he was being accused by the chief priests and elders, he did not answer anything. 13 Then Pilate said to him, "Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?" 14 And he did not answer him with even one word, so that the governor was very amazed. 15 During the festival, it was customary for the governor to release one prisoner whom the crowd wished. 16 At that time, they had a notable prisoner named Jesus Barabbas. 17 Therefore, when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, "Whom do you want me to release to you, Jesus the Barabbas or Jesus who is called Christ?" 18 For he knew that they had delivered him up because of envy. 19 While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him saying: "Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of him." 20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas, but to destroy Jesus. 21 And the governor answered and said to them, "Which one do you want me to release to you, the two?" And they said, "Barabbas." 22 Pilate said to them, "What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?" They all said, "Let him be crucified." 23 But he said, "What evil has he done?" And they cried out exceedingly, saying, "Let him be crucified." 24 And when Pilate saw that nothing was being accomplished, but rather that a disturbance was arising, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying: "I am innocent of this man's blood; you will see." 25 And in response, all the people said: His blood be upon us and upon our children. 26 Then he released to them Barabbas, but having scourged Jesus, he delivered him up to be crucified. 27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the praetorium and gathered the whole cohort against him. 28 And having stripped him, they put a scarlet cloak on him. 29 And having woven a crown of thorns, they placed it on his head and a reed in his right hand, and kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying: "Hail, King of the Jews." 30 And they spat on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. 31 And when they mocked him, they stripped him of his cloak and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him. 32 And as they were going out, they found a man of Cyrene named Simon; they compelled this man to carry his cross. 33 And having come to a place called Golgotha, which is called the Place of a Skull, 34 They gave him to drink wine mixed with gall; and having tasted it, he did not want to drink. 35 And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments, casting lots. 36 And sitting, they watched him there. 37 And they put above his head the charge written: This is Jesus, the King of the Jews. 38 Then two thieves are crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left. 39 And those passing by blasphemed him, shaking their heads. 40 And they said, "You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself; if you are the Son of God, come down from the cross." 41 Likewise, the chief priests also, mocking him with the scribes and elders, said: 42 He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the king of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He who trusts in God, let him be saved now if he wants; for he said that I am the Son of God. 44 The robbers who were crucified with him also insulted him. 45 From the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. 46 About the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying: "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" that is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" 47 But some of those standing there, when they heard, said, "This man is calling for Elijah." 48 And immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed and gave him a drink. 49 But the others said, "Let us see if Elijah is coming to save him." 50 And Jesus, again crying with a loud voice, gave up the spirit. 51 And behold, the veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom into two, and the earth shook, and the rocks were split. 52 And the tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. 53 And having come out of the tombs after his resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many. 54 And the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, were greatly afraid, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God.” 55 And there were many women there from a distance, watching, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, serving him. 56 Among them was Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. 57 And when evening had come, a rich man came from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man went to Pilate and requested the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given. 59 And taking the body, Joseph wrapped it in a clean linen cloth. 60 And he laid it in his new tomb that he had hewn in the rock, and rolling a great stone to the entrance of the tomb, he went away. 61 And there was Mary Magdalene and the other Mary sitting opposite the tomb. 62 But on the next day, which is after the preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together to Pilate. 63 saying, "Lord, we remember that that deceiver said while he was still alive, 'After three days I will rise.'" 64 Therefore, command that the tomb be secured until the third day, lest his disciples come and steal him away and say to the people, "He has risen from the dead," and the last deception will be worse than the first. 65 Pilate said to them, "You have a guard; go and make it as secure as you know how." 66 And those who went made the tomb secure by sealing the stone with the guard.
