Numbers • Chapter 1

1 And the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, in the first month of the second year after they had gone out of the land of Egypt, saying: 2 Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Israel by their families, by their ancestral houses, according to the number of names, every male by their polls. 3 From twenty years and upward, all who go out to the army in Israel you shall muster them for their forces, you and Aaron. 4 And with you shall be each man of the tribe, each man a leader of his father's house. 5 And these are the names of the men who shall stand with you: for Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur. 6 To/for Shimeon Shlumi'el son of Tzurishadai. 7 To Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab. 8 To Issachar, Nathaniel son of Zuar. 9 To Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon. 10 To the sons of Joseph: for Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; for Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur. 11 To/Binyamin Abidan son of Gidoni. 12 To/Dan, Achiezer son of Ammishaddai. 13 To Asher, Pagiah son of Achran 14 To/Gad, Eliashaf the son of Deuel. 15 To Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan. 16 These are the ones called by name, the leaders of the congregation, the heads of the clans of their fathers; they are the chiefs of the thousands of Israel. 17 And Moses and Aaron took these men who were designated by name. 18 And all the congregation gathered together on the first day of the second month, and they declared their ancestry by their families, according to their father's house, by the number of names from twenty years old and upward, by their polls. 19 When the LORD commanded Moses and he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai. 20 And the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, were listed by their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of their names, from twenty years old and upward, all able to go out to war. 21 The count of them for the tribe of Reuben was six and forty thousand and five hundred. 22 To the sons of Simeon, their generations by their families, by their ancestral houses, the appointed ones, in the number of names for their heads, every male from twenty years old and upward, all who can go out to war. 23 The count of them for the tribe of Simeon was nine and fifty thousand and three hundred. 24 For the sons of Gad, the generations of their families according to the house of their fathers, by the number of names from twenty years and upward, all who go out to the army. 25 The count of them for the tribe of Gad was forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty. 26 To the children of Judah, the generations of their families, to the house of their fathers, by the number of names from twenty years and upward, every one who goes out to the army. 27 The count of them for the tribe of Judah was forty-seven thousand and six hundred. 28 The descendants of Issachar, according to their families, by their ancestral houses, the number of names from twenty years old and upward, all who are able to go out to war. 29 The numbered men of the tribe of Issachar were forty-four thousand and five hundred. 30 The descendants of Zebulun, according to their families, by their ancestral houses, in the number of names from twenty years old and upward, all who are able to go out to war. 31 The count of them for the tribe of Zebulun was seventy and five thousand four hundred. 32 The descendants of Joseph, the descendants of Ephraim, their generations by their families, by their father's house, according to the number of names from twenty years and upward, all who are able to go to war. 33 The numbering of them for the tribe of Ephraim was forty thousand and five hundred. 34 To the children of Manasseh, their generations by their families, by the house of their fathers, in the number of names from twenty years and upward, all who go out to the army. 35 The numbering of them for the tribe of Manasseh was two and thirty thousand and two hundred. 36 To the sons of Benjamin, their genealogies by their families, by the house of their fathers, with the number of names from twenty years and upward, all who go out to the army. 37 The tally of them for the tribe of Benjamin is thirty-five thousand and four hundred. 38 These are the generations of the sons of Dan, by their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of names from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to war. 39 The count of them for the tribe of Dan was two and sixty thousand and seven hundred. 40 To the sons of Asher, their generations, according to their families, by the house of their fathers, in the number of names from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to the army. 41 The numbered men from the tribe of Asher were one and forty thousand and five hundred. 42 The descendants of Naphtali, their generations, by their families, by their ancestral houses, by the number of names from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to the army. 43 The registered count of the tribe of Naphtali was three and fifty thousand and four hundred. 44 These are the ones counted that Moses and Aaron counted and the leaders of Israel, twelve men, one man for each house of their fathers. 45 And all the numbered men of the children of Israel from twenty years old and upward, all who go out to battle in Israel. 46 And all the counted were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred. 47 And the Levites for the tribe of their fathers were not counted among them. 48 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying. 49 But do not count the tribe of Levi, and do not take a census of them among the children of Israel. 50 And you shall appoint the Levites over the Tabernacle of the Testimony and over all its vessels and over all that belongs to it; they shall carry the Tabernacle and all its vessels, and they shall serve it and camp around the Tabernacle. 51 When the Tent of Meeting is to be journeyed, the Levites shall take it down; and when the Tent of Meeting is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up; and the foreigner who approaches shall be put to death. 52 And the children of Israel camped, each man by his own standard, according to their divisions. 53 And the Levites shall camp around the dwelling of the testimony, so that there may be no wrath on the congregation of the children of Israel, and the Levites shall keep the charge of the dwelling of the testimony. 54 And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses; so they did.
