King James Version

Psalms • Chapter 51

1 For the conductor, a psalm of David. 2 When the prophet came to me as he came to Bathsheba. 3 Be gracious to me, O God, according to your kindness; according to the greatness of your compassion, wipe away my transgression. 4 Increase greatly Your mercy toward me for my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. 5 For I know my transgression, and my sin is always before me. 6 Against you alone have I sinned, and I have done what is evil in your sight; so that you may be justified in your words and may prevail in your judgment. 7 Indeed, in sin I was conceived, and in guilt my mother bore me. 8 Behold, in truth you have desired in the hidden things, and in secret, wisdom you will make known to me. 9 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 10 Make me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. 11 Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities. 12 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 13 Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. 14 Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit. 15 I will teach sinners your ways, and transgressors will return to you. 16 Save me from bloodshed, O God, God of my salvation; my tongue will sing of Your righteousness. 17 Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. 18 For you do not delight in sacrifice, and if I were to give a burnt offering, you would not be pleased. 19 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, God will not despise.
