King James Version

Romans • Chapter 13

1 Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been established by God. 2 Therefore, the one who opposes the authority of God’s command has resisted, and those who have resisted will receive judgment for themselves. 3 For the rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. Do you want to not be afraid of the authority? Do good, and you will have praise from it. 4 For he is God's servant for your good. But if you do what is evil, fear; for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is God's servant, an avenger to execute wrath on the one who does evil. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to be subject, not only because of wrath but also because of conscience. 6 For this reason, you also pay taxes, for they are ministers of God attending to this very thing. 7 Render to all their debts, to whom the tax the tax, to whom the toll the toll, to whom the fear the fear, to whom the honor the honor. 8 Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another; for the one who loves the other has fulfilled the law. 9 For these: You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not covet, and if there is any other command, it is summarized in this word: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 10 Love does not work evil to the neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfillment of the law. 11 And this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. 12 The night is far gone, and the day is at hand. Therefore, let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk decently as in the day, not in revelries and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not make provision for the flesh to fulfill its desires.
