Romans • Chapter 4

1 What then shall we say that Abraham our ancestor according to the flesh has found? 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has boasting; but not before God. 3 For what does the scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him for righteousness. 4 To the one working, the wage is not counted according to Grace but according to obligation. 5 To the one who does not work, but believes in the one who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness. 6 Just as David also speaks of the blessedness of the man to whom God counts righteousness apart from works; 7 Blessed are those whose lawless acts are forgiven and whose sins are covered. 8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. 9 Therefore, is this blessing upon the circumcision or also upon the uncircumcision? For we say, faith was counted to Abraham for righteousness. 10 How then was it counted? In circumcision or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision but in uncircumcision. 11 And he received a sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of faith which he had while still uncircumcised, to be the father of all who believe through uncircumcision, so that righteousness might be credited to them. 12 And the father of circumcision, to those not only of the circumcision but also to those who follow in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had while he was uncircumcised. 13 For it is not through the law that the promise was given to Abraham or to his offspring, that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise is annulled. 15 For the law brings about wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there transgression. 16 For this reason, it is by faith, so that it may be according to Grace, to ensure that the promise is certain to all his offspring, not only to those who are of the law but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham (who is the father of us all). 17 As it is written, "I have made you the father of many nations," in the presence of whom he believed, the God who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did. 18 He, who against hope believed in hope to become the father of many nations according to what was said: "So shall your offspring be." 19 And not being weak in faith, he considered his own body now dead, being about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah's womb. 20 And in regard to the promise of God, he was not weakened by unbelief but was strengthened by faith, giving glory to God. 21 And being fully convinced that what has been promised is able to be done. 22 Therefore it was counted to him for righteousness. 23 It was not written for him alone that it was counted to him. 24 But also for us, to whom it is intended to be accounted, to those believing on the one who raised our Lord Jesus from the dead, 25 Who was delivered up for our offenses and was raised for our Justification.
