Zephaniah • Chapter 1

1 The word of the Lord that came to Zephaniah the son of Cushai, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah. 2 I will gather all from upon the face of the earth, says the Lord. 3 I will gather man and beast, I will gather the birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea, and I will throw down the wicked, and I will cut off man from the face of the earth, says the LORD. 4 And I will stretch out my hand against Judah and against all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and I will cut off from this place the remnant of Baal, the name of the priests along with the priests. 5 And the worshippers on the roofs to the host of the heavens, and the worshippers who swear to Yahweh, and the swearing ones by their king. 6 And those who have turned back from following the LORD and who have not sought the LORD and do not inquire of Him. 7 The wrath from before my Lord, Yahweh, for the day of Yahweh is near; Yahweh has prepared a sacrifice; He has consecrated His invited ones. 8 And it shall be on the day of the sacrifice of the Lord, and I will punish the officials and the sons of the king and all who wear foreign clothing. 9 And I will visit upon all who rage against the threshold on that day, filling the house of their lords with violence and deceit. 10 And it shall be on that day, says the LORD, the sound of a cry from the Fish Gate and wailing from the Second Quarter, and a great crash from the hills. 11 Wail, you inhabitants of the quarry, for all the people of Canaan have perished; all who weigh out silver are cut off. 12 And it shall be at that time that I will search Jerusalem with lamps and I will punish the men who are settled, who say in their hearts, "The Lord will not do good, nor will He do evil." 13 And it will be a heap for plunder, and their houses will be desolate; and they will build houses but will not live in them, and they will plant vineyards but will not drink their wine. 14 The great day of the Lord is near, it is near and very quick; the sound of the day of the Lord is bitter, there the mighty man cries out. 15 The day is a day of trouble and distress, a day of devastation and destruction, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness. 16 A day of trumpet and shout upon the fortified cities and upon the lofty corners. 17 And I will gather people, and they will go like the blind, for they have sinned against the Lord, and their blood will be poured out like dust, and their flesh like dung. 18 Both silver and gold will not be able to save them in the day of the Lord's wrath, and in the fire of His jealousy, all the earth will be consumed, for indeed, it will make a sudden end of all the inhabitants of the earth.
