Matthew chapter 14 begins with the account of John the Baptist’s death. Herod has John imprisoned because John condemned his unlawful relationship with Herodias. During a banquet, Herodias’s daughter dances before Herod, pleasing him, and at her mother’s urging she requests John’s head. Though troubled, Herod orders John to be executed, and John’s disciples bury his body before informing Jesus.

After hearing the news, Jesus withdraws to a solitary place, but large crowds follow Him. Moved with compassion, He heals the sick and miraculously feeds five thousand men, along with women and children, using five loaves and two fish. Later that night, Jesus walks upon the sea toward His disciples during a storm. Peter briefly walks on the water toward Jesus but begins to sink when fear overtakes him, and Jesus rescues him. The chapter concludes with many people recognizing Jesus and bringing the sick to Him, and all who touch Him are healed.
