1 In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the hand of Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying: 2 Thus says the Lord of Hosts: This people has said, "The time has not come, the time for the house of the Lord to be built." 3 And the word of the Lord came by the hand of Haggai the prophet, saying. 4 The time has come for you to dwell in your paneled houses while this house lies desolate. 5 And now, thus says the Lord of Hosts: Set your heart on your ways. 6 You have sown much but harvested little; you eat but are not satisfied; you drink but are not filled; you clothe yourselves but there is no warmth; and the hired worker receives his pay only to put it in a bag with holes. 7 Thus says the LORD of hosts: Set your heart on your ways. 8 Go up to the mountain and bring wood and build the house, and I will take pleasure in it and I will be honored, says the Lord. 9 "Turn to the many, and behold, I will bring the house, and I will blow into it, says the Lord of Hosts, because my house, which is desolate, and you are eager, each man to his own house." 10 Therefore, upon you all shall be the heavens from above and the earth from beneath; all shall be its produce. 11 And I will call for a sword upon the land and upon the mountains and upon the grain and upon the new wine and upon the oil and upon whatever the ground produces and upon man and upon the beasts and upon all the labor of the hands. 12 Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Joshua the son of Jehozadak the high priest, and all the remnant of the people, heard the voice of the LORD their God and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him, and the people feared before the LORD. 13 And Haggai said, the angel of the Lord, in the message of the Lord to the people, saying, "I am with you," declares the Lord. 14 And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God. 15 On the twenty-fourth day of the month in the sixth year of King Darius.
