King James Version

Lamentations • Chapter 5

1 Remember, O LORD, what has happened to us; look and see our reproach. 2 Our inheritance has become a possession of strangers, our houses to foreigners. 3 We were orphans, there is no father; our mothers are like widows. 4 From our days, in silver we have poured, our trees will come in exchange for a price. 5 Upon our necks we have been pursued; we have labored but not found rest for us. 6 We have given our hand to Assyria to satisfy with bread. 7 Our fathers sinned, and we are not them, and we have borne their iniquities. 8 Servants rule over us; there is no one to rescue us from their hand. 9 In our souls, a prophet will give us bread from the face of the sword of the wilderness. 10 Our skin is like that of a furnace, scorched because of the heat of famine. 11 Women in Zion mourn as virgins in the cities of Judah. 12 They took the princes by their hands; the faces of the elders were not honored. 13 Young men carried a burden, and youths stumbled at the tree. 14 Elders from the gate have ceased in the young men's playing. 15 "Our joy has turned into our mourning." 16 The crown of our head has fallen; woe to us, for we have sinned. 17 Because of this, our hearts were faint; our eyes were darkened because of these. 18 On Mount Zion, where foxes walked desolate. 19 You, O Lord, will sit forever; your throne from generation to generation. 20 Why will you forget us forever? Will you abandon us for an extended time? 21 Restore us, O Lord, to Yourself, and we will return; renew our days as of old. 22 For if you have utterly rejected us, you have become very angry with us.
