διὰ τί; ὅτι οὐκ ἐκ πίστεως ἀλλ’ ὡς ἐξ ⸀ἔργων· ⸀προσέκοψαν τῷ λίθῳ τοῦ προσκόμματος,
English Translation
Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were by works; they stumbled over the stone of stumbling.

Wherefore? Because [they sought it] not by faith, but as it were by works. They stumbled at the stone of stumbling;

Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by works of the law. For they stumbled at the stone of stumbling;

Why? Because they were not searching for it by faith, but by works. They came up against the stone which was in the way;

Wherefore? Because [it was] not on the principle of faith, but as of works. They have stumbled at the stumblingstone,

Why so? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were of works. For they stumbled at the stumblingstone.

even as it is written, Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence: And he that believeth on him shall not be put to shame.

Why not? Because they relied on what they did rather than trusting in God (Elohim). They tripped on the stumbling-block,
