King James Version

Genesis • Chapter 34

1 And Dina, the daughter of Leah, whom she bore to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land. 2 And Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the land, saw her, and he took her and lay with her and humbled her. 3 And his soul clung to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke to the heart of the girl. 4 And Shechem said to Hamor his father, saying, "Get me this young woman as a wife." 5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter, and his sons were with the livestock in the field, and Jacob kept silent until they came. 6 And the donkey of my father Shechem went out to speak with Jacob. 7 And the sons of Jacob came from the field when they heard, and the men were distressed, and it was very hot to them because he had acted wickedly in Israel by lying with Jacob’s daughter, and thus it shall not be done. 8 And the donkey spoke to them, saying, "Shechem the son of Hamor has desired your daughter; please give her to him as a wife." 9 And you will give us your daughters in marriage, and you will take our daughters for yourselves. 10 And you will dwell with us, and the land will be before you; settle and trade in it, and take possession of it. 11 And Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, "If I find favor in your eyes, whatever you say to me, I will give." 12 Increase greatly upon me, and I will give as you say, and you will give to me the girl for a wife. 13 And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and spoke about what had defiled their sister Dinah. 14 And they said to them, "We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to a man who is uncircumcised, for it is a disgrace to us." 15 Only in this will it be good for you if you will be like us to circumcise for you every male. 16 And we will give you our daughters, and we will take your daughters for ourselves, and we will dwell with you, and we will be one people. 17 And if you do not listen to us to circumcise, we will take our daughter and go. 18 And their words were good in the eyes of Hamor and in the eyes of Shechem son of Hamor. 19 And not after the youth to do the thing, for he desired the daughter of Jacob, and he was honored more than all the house of his father. 20 And the donkey and Shechem, the son of him, came to the gate of the city, and they spoke to the men of the city, saying. 21 The men are complete with us, and they will dwell in the land and trade it, and the land is wide before them; we will take their daughters for us as wives, and we will give our daughters to them. 22 Only by this shall the men agree to dwell with us, to become one people with us, if they are circumcised as we are circumcised. 23 Their livestock and their possessions and all their animals, are they not ours? Only let them dwell with us and they shall live with us. 24 And they listened to Hamor and to Shechem his son, all who went out of the gate of his city, and they circumcised every male, all who went out of the gate of his city. 25 And it was on the third day, when they were in pain, that the two sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, the brothers of Dina, each took his sword and came upon the city safely and killed every male. 26 And they killed Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and they took Dinah from the house of Shechem, and they went out. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain and plundered the city that had defiled their sister. 28 They took the flock and the cattle and their donkeys and whatever was in the city and whatever was in the field. 29 And all their armies and all their children and their wives returned, and they plundered, and all that was in the house. 30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble upon me by making me odious among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and I am few in number, and they will gather against me and strike me, and I shall be destroyed, I and my house." 31 And they said, "The harlot will do to our sister."
