1 And Jesus, being full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. 2 For forty days he was tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days, and when they were ended, he was hungry. 3 And the devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread." 4 And Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone.'" 5 And having brought him up, he showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to him, "I will give you all this authority and their glory, for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish." 7 If therefore you will worship before me, all will be yours. 8 And Jesus answered him, "It is written: 'You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.'" 9 And he brought him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him: If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here; 10 For it is written, "He will command His angels concerning you to guard you," 11 And that on hands they will lift you up, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. 12 And answering, Jesus said to him, "It is written: You shall not put the Lord your God to the test." 13 And having completed all temptation, the devil departed from him until an opportune time. 14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee. And a report went out about him throughout all the surrounding region. 15 And he was teaching in their synagogues, being praised by all. 16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and as was his custom, he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read. 17 And a book of the prophet Isaiah was given to him, and unrolling the book, he found the place where it was written: 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor; he has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed. 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And having unfolded the book, he gave it to the attendant and sat down; and all the eyes in the synagogue were gazing at him. 21 But He began to say to them that today this scripture is fulfilled in your ears. 22 And all bore witness to him and were amazed at the words of Grace coming from his mouth, and they said, "Is this not Joseph's son?" 23 And he said to them, "Certainly you will say to me this parable: 'Physician, heal yourself; whatever we have heard being done in Capernaum, do here in your hometown." 24 And he said: Truly I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country. 25 Truly I say to you, there were many widows in the days of Elijah in Israel, when the sky was shut for three years and six months, and a great famine occurred over all the land. 26 And Elijah was sent to none of them except to Zarephath of Sidon, to a widow woman. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian. 28 And all were filled with rage in the synagogue as they heard these things. 29 And rising up, they cast him out of the city, and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, so as to throw him down. 30 But he himself passed through the midst of them and went on. 31 And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbaths. 32 And they were astonished at his teaching, for his word was with authority. 33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had an unclean spirit, and he cried out with a loud voice. 34 "Why do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God." 35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying: "Be silent and come out of him." And the demon, having thrown him into the midst, came out of him, having harmed him nothing. 36 And there was astonishment upon all, and they spoke to one another, saying: "What is this word that with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out?" 37 And a sound went out about him into all the surrounding region. 38 And after rising from the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon. And Simon's mother-in-law was held by a great fever, and they asked him about her. 39 And standing over her, he rebuked the fever, and it left her; and immediately rising, she served them. 40 And as the sun was setting, all who had sick people suffering from various diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on each one of them and healed them. 41 And demons were coming out from many, crying out and saying, "You are the Son of God." And rebuking them, he did not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ. 42 And when day came, he went out and went to a deserted place; and the crowds sought him and came to him and held him back from departing from them. 43 But he said to them that it is necessary for me to proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns, for I was sent for this purpose. 44 And he was proclaiming in the synagogues of Judea.
