King James Version

1 Samuel • Chapter 2

1 And Hannah prayed and said, "My heart rejoices in the Lord; my horn is exalted in the Lord; my mouth is enlarged over my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation." 2 There is no holy one like the LORD, for there is none besides You, and there is no rock like our God. 3 Do not speak arrogantly, for out of your mouth will come haughtiness; for God is a God of knowledge, and by Him actions are weighed. 4 The bow of the mighty is broken, and the feeble are girded with strength. 5 The satisfied are hired for bread, and the hungry cease to exist; a barren woman has borne seven, and the many children are desolate. 6 The LORD kills and makes alive; He brings down to the grave and raises up. 7 The LORD gives inheritance and enriches; He humbles and raises up. 8 He raises the poor from the dust, lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with the nobles, and He gives them a seat of honor; for the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and He has set the world upon them. 9 The feet of the righteous will be kept, but the wicked will be silenced in darkness, for a man will not prevail by his own strength. 10 The LORD will contend with my rivals; against me in the heavens He will thunder. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth and He will give strength to His king and will exalt the horn of His anointed. 11 And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house, and the boy was serving the LORD before Eli the priest. 12 And the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they did not know the Lord. 13 And the judgment of the priests upon the people: every man who sacrifices a sacrifice, and the young man, the priest, shall come as the cook of the meat, and the fork with three prongs in his hand. 14 And he shall strike with the bowl or with the pot or with the kettle or with the pan, all that the ladle brings up the priest shall take for himself; thus they shall do for all Israel who come there to Shiloh. 15 Also before they burn the fat, a young man of the priest will come and say to the man who is sacrificing, "Give the meat to roast for the priest, and he will not take from you boiled meat, but only raw." 16 And the man said to me, "They will offer as today the fat, and take for yourself whatever your soul desires," and I said to him, "No, for now you will give; and if not, I will take it by force." 17 And the sin of the young men was very great before the Lord, for they despised the offering of the Lord. 18 And Samuel was ministering before the Lord, a boy wearing a linen ephod. 19 And you shall make for him a small robe for his mother, and you shall take him from her in the days of his bringing up to offer a sacrifice for the days. 20 And he blessed Eli and Elkanah and his wife, and said, "May the LORD give you offspring from this woman in place of the petition which you asked of the LORD." And they went to their place. 21 For the Lord visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters, and the boy Samuel grew up with the Lord. 22 And Eli was very old, and he heard all that his sons did to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who assembled at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 23 And he said to them, "Why do you do these things that I hear the words of you that are evil from all this people?" 24 It is not good for me to hear the report that I am hearing about the people of the Lord. 25 If a man sins against a man and prays to God, and if a man sins against Yahweh, who will pray for him? They will not listen to the voice of their fathers, for Yahweh desires to put them to death. 26 And the boy Samuel went and grew and was good, both with the Lord and also with men. 27 And a man of God came to Eli and said to him, "Thus says the LORD: Did I not reveal myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt, in the house of Pharaoh? 28 And I chose him from all the tribes of Israel to be a priest for me, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, to wear the ephod before me, and I gave to your father's house all the fire offerings of the children of Israel. 29 Why do you kick at my sacrifice and at my offering that I commanded, and honor your sons more than me, to fatten yourselves with the first of all the offerings of Israel, my people? 30 Therefore, thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: I have said, 'Your house and the house of your father shall walk before Me forever,' but now, thus says the LORD: Far be it from Me; for those who honor Me, I will honor, and those who despise Me shall be lightly esteemed. 31 Behold, days are coming, and I will cut off your arm and the arm of your father’s house from being old in your house. 32 And you shall see the affliction of the dwelling, in all that will be good for Israel, and there shall not be an old man in your house all the days. 33 And no man shall cut off for you from my altar to exhaust your eyes and to exalt your soul, and all who increase in your house shall die men. 34 And this is the sign for you that will come to your two sons, to Hophni and Phinehas; on the same day, both of them will die. 35 And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and in my soul; and I will build for him a faithful house, and he will walk before my anointed one all the days. 36 And it shall be that all that is left in your house shall come to worship him in the storeroom of silver and a loaf of bread, and say, “Please add me to one of the priestly households to eat a piece of bread.”
