King James Version

1 Samuel • Chapter 28

1 And it was in those days, and the Philistines gathered their armies to fight against Israel. And Achish said to David, "You will surely know that you will go out with me to the camp, you and your men." 2 And David said to Achish, "Therefore you will know what your servant will do." And Achish said to David, "Therefore I will keep you as my guard all days." 3 And Samuel died, and all Israel mourned for him and buried him in Ramah, in his city; and Saul removed the mediums and the spiritists from the land. 4 And the Philistines gathered and came and encamped at Shunem, and Saul gathered all Israel and they encamped at Gilboa. 5 And Saul saw the camp of the Philistines, and he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly. 6 And Saul inquired of the LORD, and the LORD did not answer him, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets. 7 And Saul said to his servants, "Seek for me a woman who is a medium, and I will go to her and inquire of her." And his servants said to him, "Behold, there is a woman who is a medium at Endor." 8 And Saul disguised himself and put on other clothes, and he went with two men with him, and they came to the woman at night, and he said, "Please consult the spirit for me, and bring up for me whomever I say to you." 9 And the woman said to me, "Behold, you know what Saul has done, how he cut off the mediums and the necromancers from the land; and why are you lying in wait for my life, to kill me?" 10 And Saul swore to her by the Lord, saying, "As the Lord lives, if you bring upon you any guilt in this matter." 11 And the woman said, "Who shall I bring up for you?" And he said, "Bring up Samuel for me." 12 And the woman saw Samuel and cried out with a loud voice and said to Saul, "Why have you deceived me? You are Saul." 13 And the king said to her, "Do not be afraid, for what have you seen?" And the woman said to Saul, "I saw gods ascending from the earth." 14 And he said to her, "What do you see?" And she said, "An old man is coming up, and he is wrapped in a robe." And Saul knew that it was Samuel, and he bowed with his face to the ground and prostrated himself. 15 And Samuel said to Saul, "Why have you disturbed me to bring me up?" And Saul answered, "I am very distressed, for the Philistines are fighting against me, and God has departed from me and no longer answers me, not even through the prophets or by dreams. So I have called you to let me know what I should do." 16 And Samuel said, "Why do you ask me, since the Lord has turned away from you and has become your enemy?" 17 And the Lord did to him as He had spoken by my hand; and the Lord tore the kingdom out of your hand and gave it to your neighbor, to David. 18 Because you did not listen to the voice of the LORD and did not carry out His fierce anger against Amalek, therefore this matter has happened to you today. 19 And the LORD will also give Israel along with you into the hand of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me; the LORD will also give the camp of Israel into the hand of the Philistines. 20 And Saul hurried and fell full length on the ground, and he was very afraid because of the words of Samuel; also, there was no strength in him, for he had eaten no food all day and all night. 21 And the woman came to Saul and saw that he was very frightened, and she said to him, "Here, your maidservant has listened to your voice, and I have put my life in my hands, and I have heard your words that you spoke to me." 22 And now, please hear also you the voice of your maidservant, and I will set before you a morsel of bread, and eat, and may there be strength in you, because you will go on the way. 23 And he refused and said, "I will not eat," and his servants urged him, and also the woman heard their voice, and he rose from the ground and sat on the bed. 24 And to the woman, a fat calf in the house, and she hurried and slaughtered it, and she took flour and kneaded it, and she baked unleavened bread. 25 And she brought them before Saul and before his servants, and they ate, and they rose up and went that night.
