1 And he came to Derbe and to Lystra. And behold, there was a disciple there named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek. 2 Who was being testified about by the brothers in Lystra and Iconium; 3 Paul wanted him to go out with him, and having taken him, he circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. 4 As they passed through the cities, they delivered to them to keep the decrees that were ordained by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem. 5 The churches were being strengthened in the faith and were increasing in number daily. 6 And they passed through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, being forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. 7 And having come down to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them. 8 And after passing through Mysia, they went down to Troas. 9 And a vision appeared to Paul during the night, a certain man from Macedonia was standing and urging him, saying, "Cross over to Macedonia and help us." 10 And when he saw the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them. 11 Therefore, we set sail from Troas and ran a straight course to Samothrace, and the next day to Neapolis. 12 And from there we went to Philippi, which is the first city of the district of Macedonia, a colony. We were staying in that city for a few days. 13 On the day of the Sabbath, we went out of the gate by the river where we supposed there to be a place of prayer, and sitting down we spoke to the women who had come together. 14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, worshipping God, was listening, whose heart the Lord opened to pay attention to the things spoken by Paul. 15 And when she was baptized, along with her household, she urged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and stay." And she compelled us. 16 As we were going to prayer, a certain slave girl met us who had a spirit of divination, and she brought her masters much gain by fortune-telling. 17 This woman followed Paul and us, crying out, saying, "These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation." 18 And he did this for many days. But Paul, greatly troubled, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And it came out at that very hour. 19 But when her owners saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to the rulers. 20 And bringing them to the leaders, they said: These men are disturbing our city, being Jews. 21 And they announce customs that it is not lawful for us to accept or practice since we are Romans. 22 And the crowd gathered against them, and the commanders, having torn their clothing, ordered them to be beaten. 23 Having laid many blows on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them safely. 24 He who received such an order put them into the inner prison and secured their feet to the wood. 25 But at midnight Paul and Silas, praying, were singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. 26 Suddenly, a great earthquake occurred so that the foundations of the prison were shaken, and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone's bonds were unfastened. 27 And when the jailer became alert and saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, thinking that the prisoners had escaped. 28 And Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Do not do anything wrong to yourself, for we are all here." 29 And after asking for light, he jumped in and, becoming fearful, fell at the feet of Paul and Silas. 30 And leading them outside, he said: "Masters, what must I do to be saved?" 31 And they said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." 32 And they spoke to him the word of the Lord with all those in his house. 33 And taking them at that hour of the night, he washed them from their wounds, and he was baptized himself and all his immediately. 34 And having brought them into the house, he set a table and rejoiced with all his household, believing in God. 35 When day came, the commanders sent the officers saying, "Release those men." 36 And the jailer announced these words to Paul, that the commanders have sent to release you; now therefore, coming out, go in peace. 37 But Paul said to them, "Having publicly beaten us, uncondemned, men who are Romans, they threw us into prison; and now they are secretly throwing us out? No, but let them come themselves and bring us out." 38 And the heralds announced these words to the commanders; and they were afraid upon hearing that they are Romans. 39 And when they had come, they urged them, and having taken them out, they asked them to depart from the city. 40 And when they had come out from the prison, they went in to Lydia, and having seen the brothers, they encouraged them and departed.
