King James Version

Judges • Chapter 12

1 And a man of Ephraim shouted and passed by the north and said to Jephthah, “Why have you crossed over to fight against the Ammonites, and we were not called to go with you? Our house will burn over you with fire.” 2 And Jephthah said to them, "I have had a very serious conflict with my people and the Ammonites, and I called to you, but you did not save me from their hand." 3 And I will see that you are not a savior, and I will place my soul in my hands, and I will pass over to the children of Ammon, and the Lord will deliver them into my hands. And why have you come to me today to fight against me? 4 And Jephthah gathered all the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim, and the men of Gilead struck down the Ephraimites because they said, "You Gileadites are refugees among Ephraim and among Manasseh." 5 And Gilead captured the crossings of the Jordan for Ephraim, and it was that when the fugitives of Ephraim would say, "Let us cross over," the men of Gilead would say to them, "Are you not an Ephraimite?" And he would say, "No." 6 And they said to him, "Say please, a sheaf," and he said, "A sheaf," and he was not able to speak like this. And they seized him and they slaughtered him at the crossings of the Jordan, and at that time, from Ephraim, forty-two thousand fell. 7 And Jephthah judged Israel six years, and Jephthah the Gileadite died, and was buried in the cities of Gilead. 8 And afterward, Ivoztan judged Israel from Bethlehem. 9 And there were to him thirty sons and thirty daughters; he sent the daughters outside and brought in thirty daughters for his sons from outside, and he judged Israel seven years. 10 And Ibzan died and was buried in Bethlehem. 11 And he judged Israel for ten years. 12 And Elon the Zebulunite died and was buried in Aijalon in the land of Zebulun. 13 And he judged after me Israel, Abdon son of Hillel the Pirathonite. 14 And he had forty sons and thirty grandsons riding on seventy donkeys, and he judged Israel eight years. 15 And Abdon, the son of Hillel the Pirathonite, died, and he was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill of the Amalekite.
