Mark chapter 2 records several events demonstrating Jesus’ authority to forgive sins and challenge religious traditions. Jesus heals a paralyzed man who is lowered through a roof by his friends, first forgiving the man’s sins and then healing him physically, astonishing the crowds and angering religious leaders who accuse Him of blasphemy.

Jesus then calls Levi the tax collector to follow Him and shares meals with tax collectors and sinners, explaining that He came to call sinners rather than the self-righteous. Questions arise concerning fasting and Sabbath observance, and Jesus teaches that He brings something new that cannot simply fit into old traditions. The chapter concludes with Jesus declaring that the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.
