Matthew chapter 1 begins with the genealogy of Jesus Christ, tracing His lineage from Abraham through King David to Joseph, establishing Jesus as the promised Messiah and rightful heir to David’s throne. The chapter highlights key generations in Israel’s history and includes notable figures connected to God’s covenant promises.

The chapter then describes the miraculous birth of Jesus. Mary, who is pledged to Joseph, is found to be with child through the Holy Spirit before they come together. Joseph, being a righteous man, plans to quietly separate from her, but an angel appears to him in a dream and explains that the child is conceived by the Holy Spirit. Joseph is instructed to name the child Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins. The birth fulfills the prophecy that a virgin would bear a son called Immanuel, meaning “God with us.” Joseph obeys the angel’s instruction, takes Mary as his wife, and Jesus is born.
