Matthew chapter 17 begins with the transfiguration of Jesus on a high mountain before Peter, James, and John. Jesus’ appearance becomes radiant, and Moses and Elijah appear speaking with Him. A voice from a bright cloud declares Jesus to be the beloved Son and commands the disciples to listen to Him. The disciples are overcome with fear, but Jesus comforts them as the vision ends.

After descending the mountain, Jesus heals a demon-possessed boy whom the disciples were unable to heal because of their lack of faith. Jesus again foretells His coming death and resurrection, though the disciples struggle to understand. The chapter concludes with Jesus instructing Peter to miraculously obtain a coin from a fish’s mouth to pay the temple tax for both of them.
