Matthew Chapter 2
Matthew chapter 2 recounts the early childhood of Jesus and the events surrounding His protection from King Herod. Wise men from the east arrive in Jerusalem seeking the newborn “King of the Jews” after seeing His star. Herod, troubled by the news, secretly asks the wise men to report the child’s location. Guided by the star, the wise men find Jesus with Mary, worship Him, and present gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Warned by God in a dream, they return home by another route instead of informing Herod.

An angel then warns Joseph in a dream to flee to Egypt with Mary and Jesus because Herod intends to kill the child. The family escapes safely, fulfilling prophecy. Herod, enraged after realizing the wise men will not return, orders the killing of young boys in Bethlehem in an attempt to destroy Jesus. After Herod’s death, an angel tells Joseph it is safe to return. The family leaves Egypt and settles in Nazareth in Galilee, fulfilling additional prophetic words concerning the Messiah.
